I havent kept up with all that s gone on but I did read her article froma link here (and at the time thought that she may have had a point)
Just saw her interviewed (tv here in ireland)
She came across as a nice person feel kindof bad for all the backlash she got.
(bit of a softie me :-)

Personally, I don't agree with how she has gone about things but she has been vilified and people have been horrendous about her. The response to her article has upset me more than anything… I just don't think it necessary

anniewoo · 14/04/2012 00:10

Saw her on breakfast tv - much prettier on that than in her photos. Strange article though

Millie1 · 14/04/2012 09:01

Saw the Late Late too. She seemed like a normal person albeit one who seemed to be playing down what she had written. Sorry but thought she was a bit of an eejit!!

Gigondas · 14/04/2012 09:06

Why write two follow up articles if wanted fuss to die down?

mrsebojones · 14/04/2012 11:36

I read the original article and TBH I didn't warm to the woman. Not because of how pretty she is or is not but because I felt that she came across as arrogant and smug. Like others, I felt that it was probably a personality trait that meant other women did not warm to her as opposed to her own perception that it's her raging beauty. To my eye, she's an average looking woman in good shape and well dressed for her age.
Whilst I agree that the backlash has been unpleasant, I do feel that she is probably savvy enough to know that if you write a piece like that, you are going to get a response and not all of it would be positive.
To follow it up with further articles and appear on TV about it, is not the way to go to help this die down. Methinks there may be an element of further self promotion to all of this.

drywhiteplease · 14/04/2012 17:49

Next time I go to a wine bar with friends (or DH Grin!!) I will phone in advance and pre order and pay for the biggest bottle of bubbly and get it sent over to me from a "secret admirer"!!!

I think Ms Brick's problem is that in Britain we are much more modest and don't warm to people who boast about stuff,ESP women.

mrsebojones · 14/04/2012 18:28

Love it drywhite!!!!
bang on the money with modesty point.
When I was Italy in February, a group of Italian men on the next table sent over aperitifs for me and my 3 friends. Clearly we must be stunners!!!

SilkieChicken · 14/04/2012 20:21

I think she's on a huge publicity stunt to get alcohol sent to her in irony.

drywhiteplease · 14/04/2012 21:03

A woman came up to me the other night and complemented my outfit! I nearly hugged her and said" oh it was from DP with 25%off....really cheap".... Not cool, bet Sam would not react like that .

drywhiteplease · 14/04/2012 21:05

Come to think of it perhaps I should tell DP HQ and then I might get some free clothes I'm obviously a super model!!Grin

Nevertooearlyforcake · 14/04/2012 22:03

Ok, am making the lazy mistake of commenting without reading the article but assuming comments I heard reported were accurate (haha) - if I overhead a friend say she thought I hadn't picked her as a bridesmaid because she was prettier than me, I wouldn't consider that person much of a friend. I would feel they really didn't have much respect for me at all.

mrsebojones · 15/04/2012 10:47

I have friends who I would say are more attractive than me and friends who I would say are less so... TBH it's only my perception though and beauty really is in the eye of the beholder as they say. I am friends with people because I like them, because they are kind, interesting, funny and bring something to my life and, I hope, I to theirs. What they look like is frankly irrelevant... though if they were banging on about it all the time and were thinking everything I said or did was because of how they looked, then it might become a bit of an issue!!

dry white if they send you a decent dress, send it my way - I'm on the look out for one!! Might have to get SGS on the case!!

PerryCombover · 15/04/2012 11:11

I think she was paid to write a specific type of article, devised by the Mail, to get people's backs up and drive traffic to the mail website. It worked.
I think she was surprised by the amount of reaction.
Have a look at her back catelogue of articles, it seems clear that she writes up whatever Mail ideas are turned down by "real" journos

Bluepetticoat · 15/04/2012 12:08

Look- SB is a journalist who wasn't getting that much work. she approached the DM with an idea and they took it- in true DM style. It was partly her , but she was also slightly set up by the unflattering photos they published on Day 2. She would have been paid about £1K for that feature- and 3 more followed. Make your own minds up as to whether she was sensible or not! she has certainly raised her profile.

Bluepetticoat · 15/04/2012 12:51

Perry it rarely works that way TBH. sometimes journos are asked to write on x, y, z. if they are on the staff. But more often they have to approach the publication with their own ideas, if freelance like SB. That, according to what I have heard, is what she did.

MagsAloof · 15/04/2012 13:00

She came across in the original article as an unstable, deluded person.
Havent followed it since.

whitelillies · 15/04/2012 13:15

hmm suppose so - I had nt read the follow up one and was just aware of the first one - hadnt read it fully either. I did read it there now.I agree she does seem like she s a bit misguided, maybe she was trying to back track a bit after realising how she put herself across.
I fell sorry for all she had been through when I saw her on telly.

OP posts:
Bluepetticoat · 15/04/2012 14:33

There is the tiniest bit of truth in what she was saying eg some women are jealous of other women and sometimes women do choose friends who don't offer too much "competition" in the looks category- either consciously or sub consciously.

I think her mistake was to write it about her instead of a more sociological piece. But that's the DM for you- they like to sensationalise.

Her biggest mistake was to say she was "beautiful". She is moderately attractive, but nothing special. She is overweight, if you saw the pics of her in her jeans- could lose the muffin top and the beefy arms. IMO she wouldn't get a 2nd glance in most High Streets.

But money is powerful and for a writer whose career is in the doldrums, I expect she lapped up the chance to earn money and fame.

GeriatricBabyMama · 15/04/2012 15:27

I can easily believe that she got a lot of male attention when she was younger. She's does have a pretty face and she's tall, slim and blonde. Like it or not, that is a killer combination in a young woman so she probably did have men falling at her feet left, right and centre in her 20s. And she probably did have issues with other women feeling threatened by the effect she had on men.

But once you're past your early 30s, it doesn't matter how pretty you are, nobody is going to feel especially threatened by you anymore. She obviously doesn't realise that though, which is why she comes across as being so deluded. I do feel a bit sorry for her. You'd have to be seriously thick skinned not to be affected by hundreds of nasty comments about your looks even if you did bring it on yourself in the first place by being so boastful!

LeBFG · 15/04/2012 15:59

I also think it was a mistake to say she was beautiful. I think the main problem was confusing beauty with sexual allure. I've known a handful of women like her - they were never liked by any of my girl friends and men bent over backwards for them. My girlfriends sensed they were mensfriends and never girlfriends IYSWIM. Or as DH says, they were betrayers of the 'sisterhood'. Another term, less kind but more widely used, they were tarty. This method of sexual manipulation (can't think of another term) came easily but not always intentionally I think. Also, this fits in with Samatha Brick's DM article about being a daddy's girl ie grew up the apple of dad's eye etc.

But why oh why marry some knob of a (c)hunter bloke! Beyond belief if she really hold men in the sway she proclaims...

Bluepetticoat · 15/04/2012 16:19

Gerry your comments are very ageist! I know lots of women who still get chatted up and admired in their late 40s/50s, by much younger men- I assume you are quite young yourself still if you see over 30 as over the hill??

Also, SB is not slim. Maybe you didn't see the pics in the DM on Day 2- she is fat. She has a huge belly and chunky arms. She looks a good size 14-16. Even in the first piece when she was wearing a purple dress you could see a large belly being held in by Spanx!

I think this is the reason for so many of the "deluded" comments.

Shehas a certain type of coquettiish charm as shown when interviewed, but I expect got/gets her some attention. But so do lots of women- they just don't choose to write about ti.

Bluepetticoat · 15/04/2012 16:19

sorry that should be Geriatric

GeriatricBabyMama · 15/04/2012 16:57

Bluepetticoat I didn't mean that women in their mid 30s and up can't be gorgeous and don't get male attention. Sorry, if it came across like I was saying that you can't still look good past a certain age. I'm 35 myself and definitely don't think 30 is old - I'd kill to be 30 again!

What I meant was that I can't really see a woman who's over a certain age (IMO early 30s) making other women feel instantly insecure because she's soooo irresistible to men. However stunning she is. It's just my personal opinion and I didn't mean to be insulting to anyone who's no longer in the first flush of youth.

GeriatricBabyMama · 15/04/2012 17:00

I didn't mean to be insulting to anyone who's no longer in the first flush of youth.

Aargh just read that back and realised how horrendous it sounds Blush

drywhiteplease · 15/04/2012 17:17

geriatric did you mean first hot flush of youth Grin

I think the D M has achieved its aim which is to make us all cross and I wont let it because if I get any more frown lines I won't get chatted up by strangers even though I'm fab at 40!
