I've never been into make up. I experimented briefly as a teenager, but never really got the hang of it. Someone else did my make up for me when I got married & I don't own any.
I'm pretty happy without make up most of the time, but I'm starting to become more aware of my slightly blotchy red cheeks & I was hoping for some suggestions for an easy to apply foundation/cover-up type thing to make my complexion look smoother. The make up equivalent of airbrushing? Does that exist? It must do. Please tell me that everyone else's perfect faces aren't natural.
So, any suggestions? (not too many & not too expensive, or my head will explode) Please don't tell me to go to a make up counter. They're too intimidating & I tried it once & left painted up like a clown.
Thank you.

Someone will come along with better advice soon but maybe start with a tinted mosturiser, it might not sort out your red cheeks but it might and you can pick them up for cheap in boots just to give it a try (or just try the tester in boots)

If more coverage is needed then a make-up counter is best to try as the ladies will match you up but otherwise Borjous heathly mix foundation or Rimmel Wake-up foundation are very light and under a tenner.

Hopefully someone more experienced with reply soon!

Yes, Bourjois Healthy Mix or Healthy Mix Serum foundations are both really good, and would be a good starting point for you, I think. They can both be really easily applied with your fingers. Just blend in. What type of skin do you have? Oily? Dry? That would determine whether a primer would also be benifical.

Perhaps have a look at some youtube videos to learn how to apply makeup. That's what I did. Didn't wear a scrap until a couple of years ago. Taught myself, by watching Lisa Eldridge and Pixiwoo. It's not difficult once you know how, and now wear a full face every day and love it. I'm not saying you have to do that, by the way!

bagelmonkey · 12/04/2012 18:41

Thanks.
I'm not sure what kind of face I have. My cheeks sometimes get a bit dry, my nose normal to oily probably.
I'll go in search of the testers next time I'm in town. I'm far too lazy for a full face of make up!

If I was new to make up I'd go for the three things that make the most difference but don't make you look like a clown!! A foundation- I love Estée Lauder double wear as it makes me look like I have perfect skin, but it is pricy- bourjois blusher applied lightly and maybelline great lash mascara as it is very natural. X

FabMum1 · 12/04/2012 21:15

I second Bourjois Healthy Mix, it's a light texture but covers brilliantly n lasts all day. Boots are doing 3 for 2 on makeup at the moment, so you could get a concealer and blusher too.
I've bought a Bourjois blusher today, as I've heard good things about them as well.
Good luck n try and enjoy it Smile

mosschops30 · 12/04/2012 21:17

Get a good primer so you can start with a blank canvas, the BD Tesco one is great and only £10
YSL brush foundation gives you a very natural but perfect look.
Other than that just buy what you like, if you have a good base its a great start

QuinnFabray · 12/04/2012 21:25

I agree, I think you need a little extra if you use foundation, otherwise it can make you look washed out and like you're wearing a mask. Blusher and Mascara too. That's all you need. Bourjois mascara's are good. Especially the ultra volume glamour one ( I think it's called ). If Boots are doing 3 for 2, get a Bourjois foundation, mascara and blusher. That's all you need.

PavlovtheCat · 12/04/2012 21:35

must haves, whatever else you get, you should have

foundation/tinted moisturiser - I shall read with interest as still not found a foundation I like but I found Clinique barely makeup or whatever it is called quite good.

Under eye concealer/corrector - i am still struggling to find one I like that does not cost £25 a pop but i really have to have something under my eyes to soften the darkness. Whether you need this depends on how heavy your eyes look.

mascara - I am happy with no.7 long lashes or something like that, but a good quality one whatever you get.

lipgloss - this is where I spend too much money. My favourites at the moment are 'Motherplucker' by Soap and Glory, tinted gloss. I have two Clinique gloss which have lasted me forever (clear and 'natural'), and my most prized possession is Chanel Levres Scintillantes natural tint. Gloss is the best thing in the world as it can turn the most tired un-make-up adorned face into glamour.

In addition to this, as I have red skin, when I am going out (rarely these days), if i have a moment before work, or my skin is particularly bad, I wear No.7 Colour Calming Base (green one) under foundation/tinted moisturiser, and a natural lip pencil to define my lips a little more and maybe some soft green/brown eyeshadow.

I tend to wear makeup to make me look naturally healthier in my face, rather than to look glamorous. But even on days I wear no make up at all, a it of gloss makes the world of difference to how i look.

You could book a make-up artist to come to your home and show you step by step. Probably cost you around £50-70 for 2 hours and she would write down products she recommend suit you without heavy sales pressure. Lesson for life!

I love Lily Lolo mineral makeup. I'm pretty minimal when it comes to makeup:

Moisturise
Concealer applied with Baby buki or concealer brush
Foundation applied with Super kabuki brush
Blusher applied with Blusher brush
Mascara
Vaseline on lips

All from Lily Lolo (including the brushes), except for the mascara (usually from Clinique) and obviously the Vaseline. It doesn't take long, and I look / feel a lot better Smile.

RecursiveMoon · 12/04/2012 21:55

Just to add that I have tried makeup other than Lily Lolo's, it's just my current favourite Grin.

PavlovtheCat · 12/04/2012 21:56

recursivemoon can I hijack and ask a quick question? do you use the green mineral concealer? do you use it all over your face before your foundation or just around eye area (can you indeed use it around the eyes)?

RecursiveMoon · 12/04/2012 22:04

Pavlov, I don't use a green concealer I'm afraid. I currently use the lightest Lily Lolo concealer, although I think that it might be too light for me, so I'm about to order the second lightest one. I find that it works really well on any spots, and also on the areas under my eyes I use a little my nose and cheeks too Blush

PavlovtheCat · 12/04/2012 22:06

oh ok! there is a green one which would be best for me as I have red skin so it tones it down. But the one you use, the concealer, its ok for under eyes? I have heard another person recommend you see. thank you Grin

RecursiveMoon · 12/04/2012 22:10

Pavlov, oh yes, I just saw the green corrector on the LL website, I want to try it now! Yes, I find the concealer very good at concealing Grin the shadows under my eyes.

PavlovtheCat · 12/04/2012 22:15

oh good i am going to try it then Grin thanks OP your thread has helped me too Smile

chillyigloo · 12/04/2012 22:35

Clinique perfectly real.
Fab stuff!

Babylon1 · 12/04/2012 23:04

One step face base by Vie At Home (previously Virgin Vie) is just what you need. A small compact that is a foundation concealer and powder all in one, comes in 6 shades to suit your skin tone and you literally just wipe it across your face. Gives a brilliant even finish in about 10 seconds flat!!
Loads for sale on eBay too!! Can buy compact, refill or both for about 11 quid x

Pinkglow · 13/04/2012 12:57

Under eye concealer/corrector - i am still struggling to find one I like that does not cost £25 a pop but i really have to have something under my eyes to soften the darkness. Whether you need this depends on how heavy your eyes look.

Apparently collection 2000 one is really good, I havent got it myself but its always getting great reviews for such a cheapo one

peachypips · 13/04/2012 13:10

I still think though if you are going to keep it simple then blush, foundation, mascara...

dappply · 13/04/2012 13:20

I just do under eye concealer (YSL touche eclat), a concealer on any blemishes (benefit "boing" at the moment), benefit benetint cheek and lip stain and then mascara (whatever takes my fancy). takes a minute and works for me. Just look a bit healthier and prettier, but not made up.

ProfCoxWouldGetIt · 13/04/2012 13:48

I swear be benefit, I use their tinted moisturiser, and their blemish cream (boing) for under my eyes (serious dark circles)

if I'm dressing it up I'll add some eye makeup (normally just a light brown applied very lightly) and a touch of lip tint (seems to last longer than lippy for me.

They are quite pricey, but the moisturiser lasts forever - I generally get 9 -12 months use out of a tube and I wear it 5 days a week (it also had a built in sunblock)

I really like Boots No 7 Intelligent Colour Foundation. There are only 3 shades which makes choosing the right shade much easier (Light, Medium and Dark) and it blends to match your natural colour. It's really light and gives a natural finish. It's good if you find traditional foundation a bit heavy but gives more coverage than tinted foundation.

kandinskysgirl · 13/04/2012 15:03

Can I ask a silly question? My foundation looks quite cakey on my face-so when I rub it in some times you can see that I have it on-is it because I have lines on my face? It seems to settle in them. I wouldn't say they are wrinkles-more because I am so so pale you can see all facelines everywhere.

Any tips at all?
