Hand me down shoes!?!

Is it just me, or does it seem contradict having fitted hand me down shoes? Why are people doing this? I understand second hand clothing - but second hand shoes???...Really???

I passed a lovely pair of boots to my brother for my niece. If they fit her fine, it not then they only would have gone in the bin.

kinooki · 12/04/2012 15:16

How can you tell if they fit when they have been worn even slightly? You could always recycle them!

I just don't get it either.

alibubbles · 12/04/2012 16:41

The bones in children's feet are like jelly and the shoe will mould to their foot, so a second hand shoe will not fit another child properly, I despair that several of my clients hand shoes on to the younger sibling and the children's feet are nothing like each others, one is a hunky chunky and the other has skinny minny feet!

Wellies, slippers, crocs (pet hate) doodles at a push, are fine, but if a child has been fitted with a 7D, they will not fit a child with 7.5 H!!

I'd use silblings/friends hand me downs for any 'not every day shoes' so - party shoes, bridesmaids shoes, wellingtons, ballet , 'going out' shoes - anything that isn't being used on a regular basis, but for everyday shoes. No. However, sometimes people are pushed to do something that isn't ideal aren't they?! If it's 'the family eats this week or child gets new shoes', then I guess people are going to go with 'family eats'. It's not ideal, but the world wont end either.

Why are you hoiking up your judgey pants over this anyway?

kinooki · 12/04/2012 16:49

That is exactly what I thought, but was starting to think I was missing a trick by not accepting or handing down shoes! I always think that if there is one thing that I would spend a lot of money on, it would be my kids shoes! So with that in mind how can you buy kids shoes online???? Another thing that I really don't get. I have seen it for myself the exact same shoe in different colours fitting my child differently (Yes - I have checked the box to make sure it is the same!) What about anyone else?

Fingers crossed you are never really skint then eh.

IBlameThePenguins · 12/04/2012 17:02

Oh how I would love to have enough money that I could pick and choose which hand me downs to accept. My little girl has hand me down shoes and we are body grateful for them. The situation is exactly as chippingin describes since my dp was made redundant 7 months ago.

Please think before you hoik your judgy pants up. We aren't all as fortunate as you... And I'm sure you'd have an awful lot more to say if my dd was running around barefoot.

It's handy to have them as spares for occasional use; when DC school shoes got soaked previous day & I forgot to get them dry, or when the school asks for trainers rather than plimsols for X-country practice for next 6 weeks, and I don't want to try to remember daily to bring trainers in/collect them for coming home.

ragged · 12/04/2012 17:17

... or when husband drove off to work half an hour ago with someone's important trainers/school shoes/whatever in the car.

revolutionconfirmed · 12/04/2012 17:22

I buy second hand shoes. DD is fitted as an 8G and I buy second hand 8G's. In other shoes I buy a 9 and for every day shoes I usually buy new but they are cheap and rarely leather. I can't afford £35 for a pair of Clarks shoes every time DD grows out of a pair and since DD2 is a G fitting too I hand down DD1's shoes to her.

ClaireArchie · 18/04/2012 16:43

Be careful with second hand shoes, as they will mould to the shape of the previous wearers foot....

Isn't shoe fitting all a load of rubbish that only us Brits are even remotely bothered about anyway? Wink

exoticfruits · 10/05/2012 22:25

It is one thing that I put first-properly fitting shoes. Wellies, football boots etc I handed down but not everyday shoes.
