V INTERESTING hairdressing experience - long fine hair

So I went to a new salon yesterday and had an appt with the Creative Director. I hated my hair. It is long and fine and quite thin. It has been getting thinner too (due to illness). Some days I cried about it and I always got a bit sweaty and faint-feeling when I stood under bright lights and saw my scalp shining through. I'm a brunette so it looked more obvious.

Anyway.

I thought I needed the following:

  • Blunt cut to look thicker
  • Much shorter to look thicker
  • A fringe to stop my face looking so long
...So basically a lego-man bob

What did he say?

  • Layers around the front, choppy layers at the back
  • Keep the length
  • Absolutely no fringe as my hair is too wispy so it will look nice but be a right bee-yatch to style. Instead I am to add volume at the SIDES of my hair to balance my face shape.

So my hair is now a bit like this new hair

He also showed me a new way of drying it which is called wrap-drying. You get a big paddle brush and sort of wrap your hair around your head in the opposite way to which it grows which poofs it up.

And best of all...he said it's really not that thin and I shouldn't be worried. A lot of people can see their scalp under bright lights. So stop freaking out. I was v v v happy with the whole experience. Anyway there you go, a few tips for ladies with long fine hair.

What a lovely hairdresser! Do you like it? Do you feel more confident with your new hairstyle? Grin

FoxPass · 12/04/2012 11:10

That's great, sounds like he really knows his stuff, glad you're happy with it :)

tak1ngchances · 12/04/2012 11:52

I do feel a bit more confident, yes. Am just hoping I can style it nicely myself!

I do that wrap drying , it works really well , even better with a bit of mousse applied to the roots.

Also some heated rollers add loads of volume if you can be arsed.

mrsbugsywugsy · 12/04/2012 12:14

oooh tell me more about the wrap drying. How do you do it?

I like the style but I have a round face and I'm not sure if the layers at the side would accentuate it?

PooPooInMyToes · 12/04/2012 12:47

Wow what a good hair dressing experience!

Mine always go shit.

ggirltwin2pinot · 12/04/2012 12:50

you basically brush your hair in the opposite direction it grows in and dry whilst doing this using a big paddle brush and hair dryer on full blast

mrsbugsywugsy · 12/04/2012 12:58

thanks ggirltwin2pinot I'll give it a try next time I wash my hair

tak1ngchances · 12/04/2012 14:07

Yes ggirltwin that's what he did!! Is it easy? I'm afraid I'll need 3 arms to do it

OP posts:
ggirltwin2pinot · 12/04/2012 14:11

yes very easy
I hang my head upside down for mega volume

tak1ngchances · 12/04/2012 14:33

mrsbugsywugsy not sure the layers at the side would be good for a round face. He put them in mine to make my long narrow face look a bit wider.
I have no clue about hairdressing so I am not sure what styles would work for you...but if you think about the opposite way then I guess you would need volume at the crown? To lengthen I mean

Thank-you for sharing your experience. I also have long fine hair and never know what hairstlye to ask for. I love that hairstyle and have already printed the picture to take with me for my next haircut.

tak1ngchances · 12/04/2012 14:39

Yay sphynx! let us know how you get on

...but I was always told you shouldn't brush wet hair? Sounds v interesting though as I have a similar problem but my face is round/square not really sure and my hair is blonde. Love the style!!
