Swimsuits for pearshape

CharlieMouseWillDoIt · 08/04/2012 09:57

I need to get a new swimming costume. I haven't been swimming for literally 10+ years, but want to take DD swimming on holiday.

I'm a size 12-14, but very much a pearshape and have always been very conscious of my saddlebag thighs.

I've been looking online at swimming costumes with small skirts. Do these actually disguise a pearshaped body, or, as I suspect, just draw attention to the bits I want to hide??

they draw attention to it. I would go for a tankini with a padded or detailed top and plain bottom. One pieces are rarely flattering

yy to a bikini- get something that wil balance out your top half more, like ruffles on the cup

NO ONE will care about your thighs, believe me, they will be too busy obsessing about their own. And at 12-14 you're hardly 2 tonne Tessie

I am a pear and I find a bikini with tie side briefs are best. Anything with a thick side to the pants just digs in and makes me look even bigger - and those mumsy style big knickers just make my bottom half look even larger. Basically the smaller the bottoms the better - wearing too much fabric and trying to cover up actually makes it worse.

Last year I got a couple with lots of ruffles and pattern on the bikini top and kept the bottoms really simple to draw attention upwards

for example

or this

Also pick a colour that really flatters your skin tone - don't just go for black. A colour that suits you will make any swimwear look 100 times better. IE if you have a tendancy to go a bit pink or burnt in the sun DO NOT buy a bright pink bikini!

You need to avoid anything that accentuates your widest part. For me that's my thighs so if I'm going for a skirted bikini or swimsuit I have to be very careful that the skirt isn't too voluminous or it makes me look huge! Equally you can balance it by choosing a swimsuit or bikini with detailing like ruffles, bows etc elsewhere (on the bust if not top heavy, on the shoulder etc.) as this draws the eye away from your widest point. HTH x

Thank you everyone. The idea of wearing a two-piece brings me out in a cold-sweat, but you're probably right that everyone else will be obsessing about their own perceived flaws!

if youre a pear shape youve probably got a reasonable waist, no?

CharlieMouseWillDoIt · 08/04/2012 16:20

Yes, I suppose I have got a fairly decent waist, although I have got a bit of a belly still after having my baby last year. Also should have said that I'm a 12-14 top, 14-16 bottom.

PLEASE dont get a skirted one, theyre so matronly and scream I'M COVERING SOMETHING UP

Go, have fun in the water and wait till you see some of the other sights, you'll wonder what you were fretting about

vix206 · 08/04/2012 18:46

There are some gorgeous skirted swimsuits around that are definitely not matronly :)

CharlieMouseWillDoIt · 08/04/2012 20:51

This is the sort of skirted costume I was thinking of.

Link doesn't work.? I'm pear shaped as I hate my thighs, so if I can't see the tops of them I am happy so have a skirt swimsuit. Agree that there are some matronly ones out there. What about landsend, think they have skirt type bikini bottoms?

cerealqueen · 08/04/2012 21:30

Ok they are pricey but worth signing up for money off codes
This code FRIEND25 is valid till 11.59 tonight and gives you 25% off.

ValentineBombshell · 08/04/2012 21:32

Am watching with interest - any swimsuit that doesn't involve a visit to the topiarist is a bonus

cerealqueen · 08/04/2012 21:52

ooops link does work, was my computer [bublush]

frankie76 · 08/04/2012 21:55

Try simply be website - they have some nice choices - tankini and skirted ones too x

ValentineBombshell · 08/04/2012 23:18

Have a black & white swimsuit that does nothing for me colourwise, think I bought it postbaby.

This I've ordered - will see how it looks.

Thought MULTICOLOURED,size: this kind of thing only drew attention to what I want to cover up

But need to look at bikinis too as they'll probably be more flattering.

cybbo · 09/04/2012 14:27

Who sees your thighs? You're either in the water or lying down, non? The walking bit from the water back to sun lounger is...25 seconds

Can you remember the thighs of ANYONE you've seen on holiday?

It makes me sad you lot are so worried about the tops of your legs ....

mindermummy · 09/04/2012 15:25

I got that swimsuit from debenhams last year and it really was flattering im about the same size as u, 12-14 on top and 14 ish on bottom. It really did make me feel more confident. Wear whatever makes u feel better. Xxxx will be watching this with interest as away again this year and looking for another one, prob without a skirt this time. XxWink

Vagabond · 09/07/2012 20:08

I found this website www.stateofmindactive.com that sells swimsuits and swim dresses in sizes 16-26. I bought the skirtini which has built in shorts and is really pretty and flattering. Finally, I can walk around the pool without a bulky towel around my waist. Am an eternal pear!
