Loafers?

I'm looking for a flat black shoe to wear when walking to work and driving that are comfortable and pratical, but not too casual to look stupid with my office wear (heels are under the desk!). All the flat shoes I've looked at online either look like school shoes or granny shoes.

So what do you think of these? Can loafers ever look nice? I'm 30 so don't want to dress like my mum (no offence mum!).

Loafer

Thanks stylish ladies!

I have tan loafwrs a bit like that. I wear them with cropped trousers and jean, but not to work.

Do they have to be black? They are much less grannyish in other colours IMO

LittlePandaBear · 06/04/2012 11:33

Don't have to be black, but was thinking they'd go with more things if were black or grey. I thought tan/beige loafers would be more grannyish but I guess they would look better with jeans than black! Are the black patent ones any better?

I quite like the blue ones but I don't think they're smart enough.

To be honest, I'm used to either heels or boots so most flat shoes look a bit mumsy to me! I think I just need to try some on!

I think there are some pretty nice loafers around now - but those are not, sorry. They look v frumpy to me. Try New Look for loafers like all the teens are wearing - and tan or coloured much better than black imho.

LittlePandaBear · 06/04/2012 14:58

Fair enough, I did suspect they were frumpy which is why I posted [busmile]

Had a quick look on the new look website but not keen on any of them, they look a bit too much like slippers! Surely there's something between what the teens wear and what the grannies wear?

I also saw these in Accessorise, any better on the frump scale?

Office had some nice ones recently sorry I don't know how to link

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/04/2012 16:23

Just been reading the Sainsbo's magazine (talk about frumpy!) and they feature a tan pair from Next and a red pair from Monsoon, both of which look quite nice.

tethersend · 06/04/2012 16:35

Oooh yes, red Monsoon ones v. v. nice. Also in tan.

I have my eye on these from Topshop

I wonder about grannyfication as I wouldn't go near brogues but I fancy an occassional change from my bazzillion pairs of ballet flats.

LittlePandaBear · 06/04/2012 21:53

Thanks everyone. The Hobbs ones are a bit expensive for what I wanted them for, even with the discount!

I think maybe smart loafers feel a bit grown up for me. Quite like the Topshop ones but are too casual with officewear. Also don't think the red loafers are very 'me' and wouldn't wear them well.

Will get to the shops hopefully soon, thanks for all the suggestions!

StyleGuile I have been mulling over the purchase of exactly those Hobbs loafers for about 2 months now. I do love them and I'd rather spend a few quid on one decent pair of shoes that I can wear with loads of things, than buy lots of cheaper pairs. But do you think the patent and loafer combo is a current trend that, in a few months time, will be passe? If I'm going to spend nearly £150 on some shoes I want them to endure. Also, I want to be able to wear them with smart casual (mainly black) trousers for work but also with jeans. Do you think the blue or the black will be most versatile? Help me, oh stylish one ;-) !!!

(sorry to hijack little panda bear)

permaquandry · 07/04/2012 08:55

Hi panda, been looking for exact same loafers as you. Have found some nice ones in Topshop, black leather, tan sole, £45 (Kendal Vamp). M+S actually do some nice ones too. I would avoid a white eva sole (which seems to be everywhere) and I think the white stitching cheapens the MIP ones you linked to.

Possibly wearing them with black trousers will make the look grannyish tho? Unless they are tapered slim-fit 7/8s? If u are thinking dresses/skirts, definitely go for a ballerina, not a loafer. Again, Topshop and M+S do some lovely ones. Good luck!
