Please help dress me for a work's do, really, please help :)

I need to find an outfit for the evening event of a works do. During the day we are team building so jeans and boots galore. (any trendy appropriate ideas gratefully received here too) Then, we are all to change at the venue for the evening event.

I want trousers and a really lovely top. Not a dress, really really not a dress. I have a million and wear them once and immediately hate them. I am 5ft 2", quite apple shaped and a size 14. I want the skinny (but dressy) trouser look, with a floaty top but not one that makes me look like the 40 y/o mum trying to hide her baby belly which of course I am. Trousers need to be skinny as I am short and if I wear wide trousers and a floaty top I look like a barge.

I know I am too short for high neck tops, they make my face look fat. I will either wear some lovely strappy sandals of shoeboots, weather dependent. The office is full of beautifully skinny 20-somethings so I want to feel really confident, hence my wish for a trouser/top approach.

Please ladies, I really need help to break out of my fear of dressing up.

It's really hard because I would prob say a dress every time as it's only one main thing to think about.
Do you have a Zara near you? They have some really lovely simple, elegant, and not frumpy looking mum stuff that would make you feel fab and not mumsy. If not a shop try them online. They might also have some drainpipe trousers, very on trend without looking like mutton!
Hopefully some other fashio savvy person will put some links up for you soon.

Would the below work?
www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2125384/Claire-Danes-shines-premiere-new-HBO-Girls.html (have a look at Olivia Palermo's outfit - could work for you using black/navy skinnies instead of jeans).
www.hm.com/gb/product/99204?article=99204-A (for a take on the jacket) .

Warehouse also do some tailored skinny trousers.

Imho a floaty top will drown you and make you look bigger than you are. You need something with structure and shape to give you a waist like these:
green twist front
animal print
biba
spotty
black with lace
blue silk print with sleeves

Sorry for the radio silence but my broadband went on the swiff, I'm going to look at these right now - many thanks!

faux - I do see what you mean about structure and it's a really good point, I love the Biba top. I guess it's force of habit to cover up.

Thanks for the link moonlight - will check warehouse and zara for tailored skinny trousers - many thanks
