Just looked in the mirror and I have a crack in my front tooth!!

My dentist is shut now and doesn't reopen until 8:30a.m. on Monday!

I am really stressing out - what if it gets wider or goes black or falls out!!!

I am nearly in tears just thinking about it. :(

There should be an emergency dentist in your area if you don't want to wait until Monday.

blobtobetter · 30/03/2012 18:57

Looking on the NHS site trying to figure out where the emergency dentist is. None of the local ones do emergency appointments out of hours or at weekends.

Don't think I will dare sleep in case it drops out.

There has got to be an emergency dentist !

blobtobetter · 30/03/2012 19:05

Rang primary care trust number and the answer phone message says to ring NHS direct.

I thought that was for hospital / doctor type injuries.

Phone NHS 24 and they can tell you where to go/arrange an appointment for you, or at least tell you what to do.

headfairy · 30/03/2012 19:06

I've had a fine crack in one of my top front incisors for nearly 20 years now. it hasn't gone black, or split further or fallen out. It may not be a total disaster.

I hope you manage to find an OOH dentist.

ShirelyKnottage · 30/03/2012 19:07

What sort of a crack?

Keep calm. Did you bite into something hard today? Is it sore?

ShirelyKnottage · 30/03/2012 19:08

(I mean is the crack all the way up the tooth?)

blobtobetter · 30/03/2012 19:24

It is like a hair line crack from the edge of the tooth to the top. I spotted it as I looked in the mirror and the light must have been at the right angle.

It isn't hurting but since I noticed it, it feels like it is aching - might be paranoia though as I am terrified of dentists.

I don't know how I have done it - not noticed biting anything hard and haven't bumped it.

In my area the emergency dentist is hospital-based.

pushingthesenses · 30/03/2012 19:47

A friend cracked her two front molars years ago and I mean 35 years ago coming off her bike.

She has just had them veneered recently she used to moan about the cracks but to be honest we couldn't notice them..never discoloured and never broke.

blobtobetter · 30/03/2012 20:17

Rang NHS Direct - she said to go to the dentist on Monday and not to eat anything hard / chewy / crunchy between now and then.......don't think I will dare eat anything.

It's probably been there for ages. Lots of people have crazing of the enamel on their front teeth. NHS OOH dental services are for uncontrolled bleeding or swelling, in some areas even pain isn't considered on emergency!

The OOH clinic I work at doesn't even have White filling material so would be able to do funk all about a problem like that!

Your own dentist is the best bet, hope all finishes up well.

blobtobetter · 30/03/2012 21:37

I think it is new as of this afternoon - I spend a fair bit of time staring into a mirror analysing all my flaws!

I have never had a filing or polish or anything at the dentist but am so scared.

LumpyLatimer · 30/03/2012 21:42

Don't panic. DP has loads of horizontal 'cracks' on his teeth. Been there for years.

his teeth ARE crumbling, granted - he has genetically atrocious teeth - but I doubt it's going to split and break over the weekend. It could be fine for another decade!

wellilikemythinking · 30/03/2012 21:45

Usually your dentist's answer phone should have the number to ring if you need a dentist over the weekend. Although if not in pain they may tell you to wait to see your own on Monday

bucketbetty · 30/03/2012 21:46

You'll be just fine as long as the crack hasn't gone into the gum too far - that's when the cloud of doom should set in - I'm sure it won't fall out. Smile

blobtobetter · 30/03/2012 21:54

I get all worked up just going for a check up .....

I don't know how to check how far through the tooth the crack goes. Don't want to mess with it!

bucketbetty · 30/03/2012 22:20

Dont worry blob, it will be just fine. Nothing you can do until you can get to a dentist. Good luck. Smile
