Horrible, horrible brown spots on face

Any ideas about how to fade out brown spots? I seem to have more and more on my face, some days they seem to show up worse than others. I have tried a lot of the lightening creams including clinique but they don't seem to make any difference.

Anybody have any ideas? I can't afford a chemical peel!!

Erm, pop over to the peel thread in S and B

We've all bought the acid, just waiting top pop it on our faces!

Are you pregnant? I got them when pregnant but they faded eventually. The sun makes them worse so wear a sun hat or high SPF sunscreen when you are outside. I tried a few creams but nothing really worked

mumto2lovelygals · 29/03/2012 19:36

No, not pregnant. They were much worse when I was on the pill and then really improved but I have noticed now a few more appearing. I think it is my age and skin type.

I will look at the peel thread, thank you.

I have one of these and hate it. Tbh I don't know if the peel works for these and I'm considering laser...

IPL Skin rejuventation. Expensive, but worth it!

sandyboots · 29/03/2012 22:12

try the new origins serum?

mumto2lovelygals · 30/03/2012 10:46

So please tell me more itdidntworkout? Is IPL laser treatment? What sort of money are we talking about?

I am thinking most of the serums and creams are pretty much the same so maybe laser is the one to try.

Laser and IPL are different. In the new Good Housekeeping (with Celia Imre) on the front), there is actually a breakdown between IPL and laser.I have had a few IPL treatments on the Ellipse machine.

Firstly, they see what type of skin colour you have. I have fair skin, dark brown hair. They see what sort of wavelength is suitable for you. After a few days, and you haven't had a reaction, you are able to have the treatment.

They cleanse the skin first. Then they put conductive gel all over your face and start zapping away, from the chin to the cheeks, to the eyes and lastly the forehead. If you have a lot of sun damage it will hurt. You cannot have it done if you have a suntan/ wearing fake tan. I have most sun damage on my forehead at the top of my hairline. It gets less uncomfortable the more treatments you have as you have less damage each time.

I have these. I think they are called solar lentigo - or something like that. Basically, they are sun damage spots.

I had a test for IPL on my arm & would urge caution. I have light olive skin & I had the IPL done on my arm a few weeks ago, so 6 months since it last saw sunlight.

The IPL hurt alot when it was done & I had to ice pack the area all afternoon. My skin was bright red and very, very sore - literally like it had been burnt. It was so bad that colleagues at work said I should go to A&E.
It was sore to the touch for 2 days afterwards (& I was using some prescription burn cream I had at home to try & calm it down). All the freckles turned dark brown & the skin took on a very dry slightly crusty appearance. It took two weeks for it all to come off. As it came off, some areas bled slightly. I do now have an area of very white skin on my arm.

I expect, I was unlucky & either my skin is too olivey - or the practioner had the setting too high. I am passionately glad I didn't have it done on my face. If you do decide to give IPL a go, make sure you have a test patch done somewhere.

I am using brightening serums & a lightening cream (not containing anything dodgy like hydroquinone) and they have definitely improved. I've been using them since Christmas religiously morning & evening & it is only in the last few weeks, that I have started to notice a difference.

Sounds like Chloasma. I had it when I was on the pill and had to stay out of the sun. Came off the pill and it went. worth having a Google..

sandyboots · 30/03/2012 22:06

the origins I went to had some photos of the testers brown spots before and after (maybe 6 or 12 weeks can't remember) and although they hadn't completely gone the improvement looked pretty good, enough that I bought some anyhow Wink only been using it a few days though

itdidntworkout · 03/04/2012 16:03

Postbellumbugsy- that should not have happened! The frequency was way too high! When doing a patch test, they are supposed to start very low and get higher to a just about bearable. I would complain to the salon manager. It's true that your freckles turn dark brown and slough off over the course of a week or so. Sorry you had an awful experience, it really is worth trying again, if you can bear it!
