High necklines to cover scars

BreastmilkDoesAFabLatte · 29/03/2012 10:23

I've just had surgery and will be left with a scar going right up to below my collar bone. Collared shirts seem to cover it OK but wrap tops and T-shirts don't.

Does anyone have any ideas for long sleeved (I also have unrelated scar on forearm, so prefer wrist-length) tops or dresses I could wear, as casual as possible but still looking upbeat and presentable. Puke-proof and sticky-finger proof fabrics and/or easy machine-washability would be good too, for the obvious reasons.

Thanks.

How about something like this? Or a modesty panel to wear under what you have - you can easily make them, or buy and tape them to your top at the right height

BreastmilkDoesAFabLatte · 29/03/2012 10:41

Just had too google it - I'd never heard of a modesty panel. [dim]

I'd probably need an extra-high one and really I'm not great with sewing (one arm currently out of service, too) - do you know where I could buy one?

Cami will still a bit low - do you know anywhere selling higher ones?

Well, of course you don't have to cover your scars, they are nothing to be ashamed of! (so says fellow be-scarred person who does not always practice what she preaches...)

Have you looked in Zara ? I ahve this top, and I like it, it's also perfect for this weather. Note - the neck comes UP TO the collarbone, so it really depends on where you want to cover.

But take a look on the ZARA shirts page, there's actually quite a few relatively high necked tops, some with sleeves, some without.

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 29/03/2012 11:03

tunic
same idea but longer sleeves
not sure it is child friendly?
dress?

another dress
t-shirts, actually I have a few organic cotton T-shirts from zara and they wash well and are very soft to wear.

what about a tank top to put underneath any thing else? like this one

CMOTDibbler · 29/03/2012 11:34

Those tank tops look great, and a perfect layering.

I'm getting used to being out and proud (bitter laugh) with my scarring, but my keloid is very obvious and this nice weather is really the first time the full extent can be seen. Am still considering dermablend, but not till its less raised.

But I would say that not worrying about covering up is best tbh

daenerysstormborn · 29/03/2012 11:36

floaty scarves are a good cover up for any chest area blemishes. i have a keloid scar on my breast from having a cyst removed but it's high enough to be seen in anything remotely low cut. i wear vest tops under almost everything to hide it or a lightweight scarf in the summer.

CMOTDibbler · 29/03/2012 11:38

As well, a cami like this would just need a cut down the side seam, and the strap shortened to work too

Some great ideas here - thanks, and do keep them coming!

Zara and H&M have some good stuff - not places I'd considered before.

I like the idea of M&S too. Their local bra department were so lovely with a friend who was having a mastectomy - I do remember the name of the woman she spoke to.

Thanks.

too low?

bookishandblondish · 29/03/2012 15:27

Just to say if you can get to London, all the department stores (John Lewis/ House of Fraser and debenhams) on Oxford st are very good at dealing with this sort of issue (they get a lot of patients from Harley st who want to be covered up)

BreastmilkDoesAFabLatte · 29/03/2012 16:03

LeMousquetaire Thanks - but probably too low, yes :(

Bookish Good to know. A long way from london but worth trying local department stores probably.

I think I'll need to try things on before buying... hard to know from the models what any given garment might/mightn't cover. Getting dressed/undressed is currently challening enough for now!

uniqlo are great for crewneck casual tops. good quality and reasonably priced.

Jackstini · 29/03/2012 19:45

I know it's a dress but love this from H&M and could put a jacket or cardi with it? dress
or lace top
simple shell
with drawstring?

BreastmilkDoesAFabLatte · 30/03/2012 08:28

Great ideas! Thanks Thanks

When I'm able to get out and try things on I'll have an experiement in some changing rooms.

And whereas I accept the point made earlier upthread that I shouldn't feel the need to hide the scar... many people don't know I've had the surgery, and there are many people I don't want to find out simply by staring at my chest. But if I do want to allow the scar to show, I have plenty of tops which will show it :(
