recommend a face wash

Hi can anyone recommend a face wash suitable for sensitive but acne prone skin? If I use one for sensitive skin i get a lot of spots but using one for acne prone skin makes my face red and blotchy!

bar of soap?

nearlyfinisheduni · 26/03/2012 14:29

a bar of soap would dry my skin out terribly

I have ridiculously sensitive skin, I use Avene Cleanance Gel, it's soap-free.

piratecat · 26/03/2012 14:29

i found it to be fine, and my skin gets very dry. the moisturizer tho, has a medicated thing in it for the bacteria, so don't get that if you might react.

piratecat · 26/03/2012 14:33

good deal atm too, i might get two more for a fiver.

nearlyfinisheduni · 26/03/2012 14:37

meg i think i have some of the cleanance gel somewhere, i think it dried my skin out will have to dig it out as cant really remember why i stopped using it!

Lush Angels on bare skin?

" The kaolin clay base deep cleanses while ground almonds gently exfoliate the dead skin away. Rose and lavender are added to soothe and help balance out combination skin. It's our best selling preservative-free and packaging-free daily cleanser for all skin types"

tangerinajolie · 26/03/2012 14:42

Ooh yes I can!- this one from Avene has transformed my skin (which I would describe exactly as yours!).

I have been using Liz Earle for a few years but it just seemed to stop working for me and the odd spot or two were becoming too frequent. I did find the Avene one made my skin feel a tad taut for the first couple of days by comparison but then it adjusted and has really cleared my face up.
I think it was just because the Liz Earle is a creamy cleanser so just very different feel.

You only need a pea sized drop so it should last around 6 months which makes it a bargain I think!

tangerinajolie · 26/03/2012 14:44

Just seen it may be the one Meg mentions that you already have!

Give it another go if so - you could try using it once a day at night and a less drying one one in the morning if necessary.

nearlyfinisheduni · 26/03/2012 14:44

tangerinajolie that looks like a good suggestion, have you tried the avene cleanance? i have some and wondered if it differed much and if i should give it another go??

I second piratecat, it's basically just clay, I have exactly the skin you describe OP and it's the only thing that works for me.

tangerinajolie · 26/03/2012 14:59

Just had a look - it is the cleanance one.

I use the cleanance k moisturiser in the morning and then triacneal in the evening.

As they are acid based you need to just go careful and introduce your skin gradually and alternating day on day off is a good way to go if they are too strong for your skin rather than thinking you cannot use them at all.

Need to make sure you use spf in the day too as they will make skin more sun sensitive.

I have been using for a month and if my skin feels a bit too dry one day or over stimulated, I just substitute one of the products with something gentler for a day.

Have found the products v good and also good at reducing acne scars and softening the skins appearance as they are great at exfoliating and cleaning out the pores

(I am a beauty therapist btw so do have a lot of skin knowledge but yo can be your own therapist in a way if you just listen to what your skin is trying to tell you and adapt your routine accordingly. Acne prone sensitive is very demanding and fickle and what works one week may not work the next or may differ from person to person!)

Ryoko · 26/03/2012 14:59

Baby soap or some other gentle soap, acne is made worse by chemicals and too much fuss.

keep it simple a simple plain natural and gentle soap followed by a simple plain and as natural as possible moisturiser and avoid wearing foundation, just use a light powder.

tumbleweedblowing · 26/03/2012 15:04

I have similar skin, and have found everything apart from this clarins melt to be just too strong.

To put what Ryoko above said, I can't use even the mildest soap, or even just a flannel and water without it causing problems, but the Clarins leaves my face clean and soft, and since starting using it, I haven't had acne for months.

marthastew · 26/03/2012 15:08

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser. £8 from Boots and brilliant.

enjoyingscience · 26/03/2012 15:09

itsallgoingtobefine I use angels on bare skin and it's great - I get quite bad skin if I use anything too harsh - the spots are a result of sensitivity IYSWIM.

Angels on bare skin is just scrubby enough without stipping my face, and it smells nice too.

Loupee · 26/03/2012 15:29

I've been using Vichy Normaderm for my acne prone sensitive skin. The whole range has been good at helping clear up my skin, without being too harsh. Although I do find the night cream smells a bit like insect repellant!

LulaPalooza · 26/03/2012 15:56

I have the same skin type as you, nearly, and I have been using Dr Nick Lowe for a while and it really, really works. Doesn't dry my skin out and I have had hardly any spots since I've been using it.

Mbear · 26/03/2012 16:18

I use Sisley and their foaming face wash, lovely on my skin. However it costs approx eleventy million pounds a pot (thanks ma!) so maybe seeing if they do sample?

howhardcanthisbe · 26/03/2012 16:21

Try liz Earle cleanse and polish. It's briiiiiiiliant!Smile

nearlyfinisheduni · 26/03/2012 17:11

thanks for all the suggestions! As I have the avene cleanance i will give that another go and get the neutrogena one if it is too drying.

Ryoko- i know its good for the skin to not wear foundation but my skin would lookeven more awful without it!
