Trousers for the 'actually I'm pregnant but just look bloated' stage

I'm 10 weeks pregnant and as I'm apple shape anyway, my tummy is already disproportionately large to my slim(ish) legs. I'm a size 10-12 and need some light summer trousers for the next few weeks. I find jeans very heavy (especially in the heat we had yesterday!) but dislike leggings as I think they don't always look smart enough IYSWIM?

I am normally a dresses person but the reason I am looking for trousers is we are going away for a few weekends over the next month and will be doing lots of walking- I would feel a bit silly tramping the Yorkshire dales in a dress!

I like the idea of chinos but wonder if the pleated top effect would just make my tummy look even huger than it is already?

Budget is up to £30 per pair trousers- no more as if they are non-maternity they won't last me. This is the other dilemma- to buy maternity now (seems a bit early?) or buy ordinary clothes in a size up- but risk the bum and legs being too big? Argh!

Any links/suggestions gratefully received!

TIA

Is it your first pg? I got very big quickly this time round so was wise to buy things early. The demi bump bands are good for first c20wks imo. Buy from Topshop or Gap and you'll probably get 2/3 back if you sell on eBay after. Otherwise some roll top trousers / yoga pants? (Gap, Topshop etc do them) They're not stylish but are comfy and if you need them for walking could be a good option.

I just got these maternity chinos from Next, which are great. The stretchy bit is the pocket area rather than the whole waistband so they aren't obviously maternity ones, and they are quite straight legged so not massive looking. I'm only 8 weeks but needed trousers and was loathe to buy anything I can't wear for long!

A note of caution though, I tried on the natural ones and liked them so much I bought them in navy too - but the navy ones are baggier and don't fit as well, I think the cotton's different. So do try them on, but only £24 so a good buy.

Thanks both. it is my first pregnancy but I think as I carry my weight on my tummy anyway it is noticeable much earlier than someone with a flatter stomach, sigh!

Thanks Heidi, I'm tempted by those chinos in the natural colour, did you just order your normal clothes size?

In most maternity wear you should order your normal size. It's worth looking at trousers with an elasticated waist too Grin. Sound criminal but Next have a pair in the Tropicana range that are purple & red patterned and I'm wearing them at 23weeks.

For when you get a bit bigger, H&M are brilliant. I just ordered some coral cropped chinos and 7/8 jeans with proper bump bands (I find them more comfy now) & they're excellent.

Hi - I tried them on in the shop and found the sizes came up a bit generously. I'm often a 12, sometimes a 10 depending on the shop, but in these the 12 was way too big, 10 was perfect. The navy 10s are bigger, so I'm saving them for a few months down the line!

Agree with monkeysmama that H&M stuff is fab, I got tops and trousers there last time round.

It's worth investing in some nice things to wear now, you'll feel better for it and for the first months after the baby's born you'll be wanting them again. I love the roll top yoga pants from White company, so flattering and comfy I bought several pairs and wore them non stop post-nataly. Second the motion for gap maternity jeans too - you get a proper shape on your legs and hips and comfort round your tummy. Definitely don't go up a dress size in normal clothes, they'll just be saggy on your bum and fall down!

Thanks all, I have ordered some chino style trousers from H&M and also those Next ones- thanks for the tip about going a size smaller Heidipi. If they don't lookright I will bite the bullet and order the Gap ones, the price will be worth it if they last me the whole pregnancy.

Thanks again!

I did really well with Next trousers. It took me a while to get there though, like normal jeans there's a lot of trial and error! x
