M&Co - nice dress but who are they?

Following another thread I found this dress and I think it looks cute and summery but I have no idea who the comapny is - what are their clothes like quality-wise? I'm not expecting an heirloom for that price but would like it to last nicely all summer.

All I know about them is that it's my Mum's favourite shop and she'll be 60 this year...

SparkyMcSparrow · 23/03/2012 21:31

M&Co used to be MacKays (sp?) I think.

We have one in our town, quite good I think.

I have a bag from there that has lasted me 9 months, so I should think a dress would last all summer easy.

CointreauVersial · 23/03/2012 21:31

I think they used to be McKays.

Very much along the lines of Bon Marche/BHS, but sod the label - if you like the dress, buy it.

OctopusSting · 23/03/2012 21:32

Ooh, i quite like that Helen!

The shop is rather grannified, but i have found some gems. However i do think they are a tad overpriced for what they are. I like the dress but my head would say £25 not £35.

Also it is 100% polyester which may be a bit sweaty on a hot day.

Quality is generally pretty good though.

novelsituation · 23/03/2012 21:34

They used to be called Mackays. They are often found in little towns - e.g. Thurso, Inverurie, Linlithgow in Scotland. Quality is patchy imo, although I had a colleague who had some nice buys which she was very happy with.

HelenBaaBaaBlackSheep · 23/03/2012 21:39

Ooh, I think remember McKays from when I was at school and not in a v good way!

Might see what their returns policy is like...

they are a bit urghh, but I've bought the odd thing there that's been fine. I find that often things are not quite right iyswim. A long skirt for example, would just be that little bit too short to be fashionable. Might be a good idea to check measurements before you order?

abigboydidit · 23/03/2012 21:55

Would definitely approach with caution! They had a photo of a model in a beautiful belted dress in the window today next to the actual dress and they looked completely different.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 23/03/2012 22:35

When it was Mackays I always thought it was an old lady shop, but started going in there when I was at my mum's because someone told me their baby stuff was good, which was true. Then a new one opened up in my town, branded as M&Co, we have very few clothes shops so I do go in quite often and it's certainly not as frumpy as it was when it was Mackays.

I think comparisons with Bon Marche are a little harsh, but agree with approaching with caution, and the fact that a lot of it is just not quite right. Looks OK on the hanger but then you find it's frumpy on. Some of it is overpriced for what it is as well, you can get similar for half the price in Peacocks for example. Having said that, I bought a dress there last autumn that I have worn most weeks and had no end of compliments on, it has been washed at least 30 times on that basis and is still as good as new. I've also had some nice sandals and boots from there.

Rexy · 23/03/2012 22:36

I have a couple of dresses from them and they are great, both for their fit and price. I recently bought a bright blue lace sleeved top and it's gorgeous and was cheaper than similar tops in Warehouse and Oasis.

They have a Loyalty card and I recently got a £5 to spend.

I also really like their kids clothes and regularly get my dd's knickers from there.

kickmewhenimdown · 23/03/2012 22:46

I work next door to a branch of M & Co so can be found wasting time in there before and after work. It can be a bit hit and miss. I would say that some of their stuff is great (I got my current most favourite top out of there) and some of it is oap-ish iykwim. Also I think their stuff can be overpriced but they often have sales going on. Also quality can be hit or miss too i think.

lololizzy · 24/03/2012 19:48

they are very Bon Marche. Quality is not great for the price. I go through (sort) hundreds sometimes thousands of items of garments a week (work for a charity shop) on the whole they don't wear well, more Primark quality than say M&S, if i come across bobbly faded stuff quite often its M&CO. but fine for one season

ggirl · 24/03/2012 19:55

there is one in town and I have never found anything in there I like
lots of nearly like but they always fall short somehow

my mum loves it when she visits and buys loads

bruffin · 24/03/2012 19:57

Different league to bon marche. I have bought m&co stuff and it tends to be natural materials, non of it had bobbled and has lasted years.

VivaLeBeaver · 24/03/2012 20:28

I wouldn't set foot in Bon marche but have got stuff from m&co. Quite a lot of it is aimed at 50plus, however there is definetly some on trend stuff. I find quality is better than next, which maybe doesn't say much these days.......

NeshBugger · 24/03/2012 20:31

I bought that dress today Grin

bronze · 24/03/2012 20:31

It's very hit and miss. I have a gorgeous dress that I wore to my inlaws ruby do at a rather swanky London hotel that I got from there

travailtotravel · 24/03/2012 20:34

I have one in the town where I work, its worth a squizz now and again for bits (mainly tops for me) ... but then I have no cool as I apply the same principle to Bon Marche - worth a squizz now and then just in case !!

ameliameerkat · 24/03/2012 21:46

I bought this top in age 13+ from their Kylie range (I wear a size 10/12) and I really like it!

kickmewhenimdown · 24/03/2012 21:57

i bought this and absolutely love it

Rexy · 27/03/2012 22:32

I we t in today and bought a lovely bright pink sleeveless lace top with a matching shrug, they are do new they're not on the website.

Just spotted a red front slit skirt too

Bunbaker · 27/03/2012 22:41

I tend to go there to buy clothes for DD (11). Their adult clothes are a bit hit and miss and I find them a little overpriced. Next have a very similar dress in their stores, but I can't find it online.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 27/03/2012 22:52

I used to get things for DD there, but she's now 14 and wouldn't be seen dead.
Never managed to find anything for myself in there, despite being 48 Hmm.

I agree with whoever said there's always something not quite right with their stuff - that dress, for eg, is too long and rubbish material for the price.

HAve you looked at the great bargains to be had at Dorothy Perkins lately ?

Evenstar · 27/03/2012 23:03

They have a lovely range for larger sizes by a Danish designer Anya Madsen, I got this dress www.mandco.com/dresses/twist-floral-dress/invt/1700278pacific/ and have worn it several times already and had lots of compliments. I would say it was almost as good quality as similar from Boden, though the jersey is not quite as thick> I have quite a few things that I have bought over the years and found the quality perfectly acceptable
