How do I dye white jeans?

I have a pair of white Baxters which I never wear due to the colour, although they fit brilliantly. I was thinking of dyeing them a pastel colour - perhaps lemon yellow or lilac. Has anyone done this before and if so, how do I do it? TIA Smile

Go to a haberdashery or fabric supplier.
They will sell a range of dyes that can be used easily in your washing machine.
It's really not difficult. Just follow the instructions.
Weigh the jeans before you go shopping, then you'll know how much to buy. It's calculated by the weight of the fabric.

Washing machine dyes are brilliant and will work well on cotton. I would definitely do it.

Superene · 23/03/2012 21:31

If your machine is a washer dryer it will wreck your machine. Use the Dylon for use with a bucket instead.

DONT! white jeans very in this summer!! Grin

Thanks - will give it a go, separate washer & dryer so hopefully not a problem. I know they may be in but in my mind they are still too Liz Hurley for my liking. Not really sure why I ever bought them actually....

So lilac or yellow?

Bear in mind the thread on the jeans may not dye as well. So you might get lilac jeans with white stitching.

MrsSchadenfreude · 23/03/2012 21:47

Lilac. One box of the Dyson machine dye should do the job perfectly. You will need lots of salt too.

startail · 23/03/2012 21:51

Why can't you use a washer dryer??

anniewoo · 04/04/2012 21:02

DO NOT USE DYLON IN THE WASHING MACHINE. I did and 6 months later it ruined about 3 or 4 whites washes. Dylon compensated me but i was still out of pocket.

HSMM · 04/04/2012 21:36

I've dyed things in the washer/dryer loads of times and never had any trouble. My DD had a white denim skirt/jacket set, which I dyed purple for her and she loved it.

Dollydowser · 04/04/2012 21:41

I've done black and dark blue dye in my washing machine and had good results and no problem with white washes afterwards.

anniewoo · 05/04/2012 12:53

Like i said Dylon compensated me. Got a bog standard letter initially but pursued it. Methinks I am not yhe only one that this has happened to. DH's Eton brand shirts at almost 100 euro a pop( i know, i know -not my idea!!Blush) a 6ft duvet cover etc

Catsmamma · 05/04/2012 12:58

I have dyed loads of things in my machine and never had a speck of bother with whites after!!

One elderly white cutwork duvet and pillowcases from 1000wash white to vibrant amethyst, the embellishments around the cutwork holes did go a darker shade, but it looks really really good

And a heavy peach velvet curtain to midnight blue.

I do stick to dark stuff for one or two washes, but never a hint of dye left!

GoblersKnob · 05/04/2012 13:55

I use Dylon machine dye alot and have never had a problem with a later wash, you do need to run a 90 degree wash after using it though.

I dyed a white denim jacket shocking pink last year, it is one of my favourite things Grin

Do be careful with the stitching, it will not pick up colour. If the jeans have than brownish stitching that maost jeans have it will look fine with any colour, if it is white stictching, think very carefully about the colour you use or it might look crap. Lemon yellow would probably be your best bet for it not looking noticable, however the lightest Dylon do is sunflower which might be a bit dark.

anniewoo · 05/04/2012 16:59

O was teally happy too. It was almost 6 months later that it happened. Really strange. Dye must have lodged in the rubber rim??? Yes i did give it the 90 degree wash after.

Optimism · 05/04/2012 19:37

I had exactly the same experience as GlitterKitty when dyeing white jeans navy years ago (the last time coloured jeans were around!) - great in theory but the stitching stayed white which didn't make for a good look. Never wore them again. Cotton absorbs the dye but the synthetic thread they use for stitching them up doesn't.
