I'm in my mid-thirties and have never had my ears pierced. I have been seeing lots of lovely earings recently and for the first time in have a desire to have my ears pierced. What do you think, when did you get your pierced, does it really not hurt??

it doesn't hurt that much, certainly something you should be able to cope with.

then again- i did it 3 times as i kept letting them grow over, so needed them redone! and then found that i reacted to most earrings, so ended up letting the last hole grow over. so now i've got an unsightly mark on each ear where the earrings should be.

so, in short- no i wouldn't get them done because i don't think it is necessary and wouldn't add much to my life to wear earrings! but the pain itself wouldn't put me off (though the bit where your ears go crusty and scab over, and then you have to keep twisting your earring to ensure that the hole doesn't close over the earring- that is eurgh!!!

SundaeGirl · 21/03/2012 23:59

Oh, yes, definitely I would. I LOVE earrings. Weirdly, I was wondering today why some people don't have them done!

Don't be afraid of the pain, it's over in a second. And then you have the lovely world of earrings at your feet. Fabulous.

I can't live without earrings. Even if I'm wearing no make-up (often) earrings make me look 'dressed'.

dixiechick1975 · 22/03/2012 00:27

I'm same age as you and sometimes thing about getting it done.

DD is 6 and I think she will want it done if I do so think I will wait and maybe get done together when she is older.

I fancy small diamond studs.

Violetgirl · 22/03/2012 15:53

Hell yes! Earings are such a great way of adding a bit of glamour to anything. I love them.

Chrysanthemum5 · 22/03/2012 16:00

I had mine done at 13 but when I was in my 30s I let them grow over. Got them redone at 40. Pain was not too bad and I found it went pretty quickly I didn't find turning the earrings a problem at all. So if you want to wear earrings I'd get them done

flamingtoaster · 22/03/2012 16:04

I was in my thirties when I got mine done - because my MIL wanted to give me some beautiful sets of earrings. The actual piercing is a very momentary pain and the aftercare doesn't hurt at all if you are thorough with keeping everything spotless.

OddBoots · 22/03/2012 16:08

I had mine done with a gun at 16, they refused to heal whatever I did so I gave up at 20 and let them close.

For my 30th birthday I got them done again with a hollow needle at a tattoo place and they healed beautifully, I'm nearly 34 now and love all sorts of earrings.

MrsMcEnroe · 22/03/2012 16:08

I had my ears pierced for the first time when I was 27 because I wanted to wear earrings on my wedding day Smile

It is, as the other posters have said, a momentary pain - in fact it's not really pain, it's a stinging sensation that lasts for a couple of seconds and then that's it.

Go for it!

Rezolution · 22/03/2012 16:10

I got mine pierced when I was 32. I just felt like doing something out of character for once.

HettyKett · 22/03/2012 16:22

Go for it!!

browny · 22/03/2012 16:27

Go for it! I had my ears pierced with my daughter...she was six and I was 34 - she wasn't scared a bit but I was lol! It really doesn't hurt, your ears feel really hot for a while but it's not painful.

tunaday · 22/03/2012 16:51

I had mine done at 16 and they swelled up like a pair of cauliflowers. I had to take them out and let them grow over. I had them re-done in my 30's just on the spur of the moment and had no trouble whatsoever. I agree about more of a 'stinging' then a pain and about them feeling a bit hot but they settled v quickly and I have worn them ever since. Now I sort of feel 'un-finished' if I'm not wearing any! I'd def go for it.

LtheWife · 22/03/2012 18:24

If you do decide to go for it, please please please go to a professional piercer that uses a needle rather than a gun.

Forcing a relatively blunt earring through the earlobe at high speed a) causes unnecessary trauma that increases the risk of complications and b) is much less accurate so increases the chance of ending up with wonky piercings. There's also an increased risk of infection from a gun, although the cartridge is sterile the rest of the gun isn't. A disposable hollow point needle on the other hand is completely sterile, doesn't rely on force as it's sharp, creates a clean channel and is more controllable.

maamalady · 22/03/2012 18:56

I got mine done a couple of months ago - I'm 29! It really doesn't hurt much., and mine are pretty much healed completely now :)

EvenBetter · 22/03/2012 19:15

I wouldn't have mine done now, I got em done when I was about 10 and they constantly got infected for years and years. They still close up when I take earrings out so I have to shove earrings through scar tissue and putting in/removing them hurts every time, gross stuff builds up on the earring..
The only reason at all I'm glad I have them pierced is my gorgeous earrings on my wedding day!

IHaveAFeatureWallAndILikeIt · 22/03/2012 19:17

yes! I was 17 when I got my ears pierced so very remember the pain and it wasn't that bad, just uncomfortable for a day rather than painful. Its MUCH less painful than waxing and much quicker!

IHaveAFeatureWallAndILikeIt · 22/03/2012 19:18

mine were done with a gun at derby market (by a lady who showed me her hygiene certifcate and got the gun out of sterile packaging in front of me) and it never got infected or anything.

Stangirl · 22/03/2012 23:44

I never had my ears pierced when young because my Mum stopped me saying it was "common". I became addicted to screw and clip earrings.

Unfortunately I wore a lot of earrings that were too tight and made my ears bleed. In the end my ears self-pierced when I was 40. I suddenly realised that my hoop earrings with a spring-loaded plug thing were actually going through my ears. I've never looked back. Love having pierced ears.

Before this though I had both my belly button and nose pierced by a highly recommended piercer. They said NEVER to use a gun to pierce anything - always a needle. Something to do with damaging the tissue.

Tolalola · 22/03/2012 23:46

I got my grandmother's ears pierced for her.

For her 90th birthday Grin.

You're never too old. Go for it.
