Can you lovely and clever people help me find work trousers for outdoor work?

I'm a garden designer/landscaper and I get stuck in and dirty.
I am having great trouble finding trousers that are nicely fitted and still strong.
I keep having to wear men's trousers with a belt to keep them up. I'm fed up of it as it makes me feel like a tramp, I have to spend most of the week dressed like this and really I can be quite stylish!

I am size 8/10
5' 7" tall
28" waist

NO WAISTBAND ON THE HIPS NONSENSE PLEASE.... sorry for shouting but this is the main problem. All women's trousers assume we want to wear them low rise but this is really impractical when I need to tuck my vest/top in them and don't want to reveal flesh when I reach or bend.

Ideally I would really like something with front and back pockets, in cotton drill wit a bit of stretch in there. With a waistband on my waist or just below, yet still flatfronted ifykwim....

Fingers crossed I'm not being over realistic, I've had trousers like this before but have worn them all out now.

Snap, pear, same occupation and had the same problem until I discovered miniBoden.

I buy the drawstring waist trousers, jersey lined ones for winter and twill for spring and autumn. They are totally hardwearing and if you manage to buy them in the sale they are even cheaper. Some pairs are in their fourth year now and really get thrown out because I have abused them when painting fences.

I am wearing the age 13, I wonder whether the oldest age would fit? Their website has measurements for waist and leg length.

Well I don't know if they will be stylish enough for you, but certainly in the winter I like my Seeland waterproof trousers for anything garden/pet/livestock related.

I got them in Scats, in the sale as they started off being very dear. They're high at the waist, loads of pockets, nice and comfortable, lined, waterproof on the outside but not crackly and they have a shape like the sort of breeches in the Land Girls Smile so tucked into riding boots or wellies they look really nice.

Anyway I don't know if that helps a bit.

Can I suggest that you repost this in World Cup 2010 with a thread title starting Outdoorsy Shite? This sounds much more like Outdoorsy Shite than Style&Beauty.Grin

I find my walking trousers great for gardening, and they don't look bad - the ones I've got fit well and have the sort of waistband you want (craghoppers and Hawkshead). Most of them aren't cotton, but the fabrics are designed for doing stuff in, and tend to be pretty good at resisting brambles, and are easy to wash.

Grimma the very reason I am posting S&B is because I want to still look stylish even though my workplace is outside. Hoping for some nicely fitted but flexible trousers that I can wear all day every day without looking like some dayglo rambler or dreary farm worker (not knocking the farm workers, I've been one myself often).

I've ordered the mini Boden boys ones in age 14, fingers crossed they fit. Am still up for suggestions though as it would be useful to own more then one pair of work trousers.

Walking trousers aren't typically dayglo (navy and khaki predominate) - those I've had are 'nicely fitted and flexible'. Its the other bits of ramblers kit which let the side down (fleeces and goretex and woolly socks and - too much for me - gaiters) Grin

what about RM Williams? They are an Austrailian Outfitters, pricy but do come up on Ebay, different leg lengths, hi-rise, mid rise, low rise. The Moleskin versions last. I wear mine for Dog Walking, doing the Horses, Gardening.... work in a Saddlers (on Maternity now tho) and they are very popular with Outdoorsy peeps.

CuttedUpPear · 23/03/2012 07:36

Had a look on ebay for RM Williams, very nice but everything there in my size at the moment is white or candy pink. Lovely but not practical!

The Mini Boden trousers arrived today (well done Johnnie) but I don't like the drawstring waist. Shame cos the quality is good and they would be hardwearing.

I had hopes for King Gee but don't like the darts in the front of the cotton drill ones [fussy]

The search goes on......
