Recommendations for gradual fake tan moisturiser

I'm looking to start preparations for some spring/summer weather (one can hope!) which will inevitably involve showing the pale legs and arms which have been hidden for months! Can anyone recommend a decent gradual fake tan which is easy to apply, preferably one which is a gradual colour built up over several applications and easy to maintain. Recommendations for exfoliators would also be appreciated! Happy to spend a bit more for a good product.

The Garnier one is great.

I am particularly annoyed as the St Tropez hype says:

"Our innovative Aromaguard? fragrance technology eliminates the tell-tale self tan aroma by a minimum of 70% and instead gives a beautiful subtle, yet refreshing fragrance.

Aromaguard MY ARSE.

Garnier is my favourite.

I like dove but don't feel it wears off as well as garnier.

vanity bronzing custard is brilliant - builds really nicely. It s organic and doesnt smell too much.
there s vit e and a and aloe vera in it so it s great for skin- i swim lots (4-5 times a week) and use this and have managed not to have streaking problems (i use exfoliating mits in the shower once or twice a week)
It absorbs fairly quickly into the skin and you dont need lots of it especially if you re letting it build up. hth
here s a linky

I used the Garnier and ambre Solaire last summer. I still have 2 half full bottles after not being able to tolerate the smell. DH complained as well.

Does St Tropez smell bad/strong as well?

Any fake tan without the whiff??

ProcrastinateWildly · 19/03/2012 23:34

I think the smell is worse on some people than on others. Some people say it is a biscuity smell, but on me it smells more like dirty bedsheets. There is no way I could casually apply it in the morning, then go to work. It is an offensive odour when applied to my skin.

This year I have a Garnier one which smells gorgeous - fresh apricot smell, not fake tan-ish at all. The colour builds up really quickly but it is way stronger than other ones I have had e.g. Dove - you need gloves to do it really as I was fearing orange hands! It faded slightly unevenly but that was because I didn't bother to exfoliate all over to keep it even. Generally it was good.

Another vote for Garnier Summerbody here. It does indeed smell delicious. Used it last year when I was preggers and was mighty impressed. Much preferrred it to St Tropez.

Been using it again daily for about 10 days now (going on hols tomorrow) It looks so natural and has given me that bit body confidence I need for first days in my bikini - 4 months post pregnancy and all.

I's about £5 for a 250ml bottle and is currently part of Boots 3 for 2 mix and match offer! Well worth it I reckon.

I do my back by doing as much as possible with my hands (with a mitt on) and then getting a body brush with some fake tan on the wooden back and using that to spread tan on the bits I can't reach.

BonfireOfKleenex · 20/03/2012 13:13

ProcrastinateWildly - me too, annoying, isn't it. Even the gradual ones smell awful.

But actually the St Tropez Gradual smelled overpowering even before it was out of the tube, it's so scented, yuk.

The Famous Dave one claims to not smell bad as they don't add any fragrance to it at all, I don't see how this stops the DHA smell though.

HipHopOpotomus · 20/03/2012 13:22

I've only used the Garnier one - brought on special from Boots for about £2.50. Works quite well and the smell is fine.
