Hairy arms!

I have REALLY hairy arms :( I have always known I have really hairy arms, but in my youth i managed to convince myself that as noone had ever commented on them then it actually doesn't really matter. I am now longer in my youth and have had TWO comments today about them (granted they were both made by small children, though I do work in a school so the comments of small children is unavoidable) and i am now a little bit paranoid about them.

Everywhere else on my body has, what I would consider, a 'normal' amount of hair but my arms look like I have had the forearms of a middle aged man grafted on from the elbows down(it doesn't help that I have literally MASSIVE hands) - I sound bloody gorgeous don't I

What can I do? I don't want weird hairless arms, but even in the summer when the hair does lighten a bit you can still tell that they are unsually hairy. Can I bleach them? (mmmm bright blonde hairy arms) or should i just get rid of the hair? If I got rid of all the hair would the rest of me suddenly seem unusually hairy? (panicking a bit now!)

epilator

sponkle · 16/03/2012 21:45

:)

ThatVikRinA22 · 16/03/2012 21:49

i have quite hairy arms and im dark haired naturally so it tends to show - if it gets too bad i whip it off with those self wax strips or an epilator.

i would just whip it off. (but DO NOT shave it!! it will grow back worse - either wax it or epilate) and have no fear - that wont stimulate any hair growth anywhere else! in fact, waxing tends to make hair regrowth lessen over time.

it its bothering you i would get rid.

Squitch · 16/03/2012 22:14

But that will hurt! I know that is what I will have to do (but I was hoping someone would come on and say 'oh Squitch, haven't you heard of that miraculous arm hair removal that doesnt hurt and is really cheap?' and I could have said 'oh brilliant, I'll do that then).

Seriously though, an epilator on your arms! My eyes are watering just thinking about it. I have however, never waxed anywhere so I am happily oblivious to the potential pain that will cause (though I am imagining it)

Thanks though :)

Silky Mits used very gently? I often epilate but sometimes I like to use something similar to silky mits which kind of exfoliate the hair away. You have to be careful with them as it is very easy to over exfoliate your skin with them, leaving it sore.

Squitch · 16/03/2012 23:20

Now Anon22 I like the sound of Silky Mits, they sound relatively pain free! Thank you, will buy some tomorrow and see how I get on

Pot of veet. 99p shop Smile

Pinkflipflop · 17/03/2012 07:05

Wax the hair off! You will not believe the difference! I use the self wax strips, it isn't sore at all. You have to give it a go and if you feel weird and hairless just don't do it again. Speaking as someone who used to have hairy arms it is the only way Smile

Don't think that bleaching the hair is an alternative-it isn't!! Blonde hairy arms looks just as noticeable as dark hairy arms.

theincredibequeenofwands · 17/03/2012 07:29

Don't use bleach - ever!

I saw a girl at a wedding with uber blonde hairy hairy arms. It looked awful.

Also saw a woman once who had bleached a prominent 'tache on quite tanned skin. Looked far worse than a regular lady 'tache.

Get rid of hair with wax, nair or veet. Don't just recolour it!

Squitch · 17/03/2012 08:26

I wasn't seriously thinking of bleaching it. I'm loathe to try a hair removal cream. The last time I used one (which was granted about 15 years ago) I blistered quite badly on my legs. I should imagine they are not as harsh now (and don't stink so badly). I know waxing is the way to go really, but the thought REALLY scares me. I can feel it in my teeth how painful it would be (if you know what I mean).

Thanks for all the tips though. Think I'm going to go with the Silky Mit to start, see if I can live with hairless arms and then if it doesn't feel too weird, pluck up the courage get really drunk and try waxing them.

Thanks again all

Don't mean to go on about waxing but it really isn't sore- I love waxing my arms it is a nice kind of pain

You could always go to a salon? I tried the silky mit thing before, twas useless!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 17/03/2012 09:05

I bleach, but mine are not hairy all over, just down the 'front' if that makes sense.

saintlyjimjams · 17/03/2012 09:07

I use hair removal cream. Most useful tip I learned in Japan (all the women there de-hair their arms). :)

Thistledew · 17/03/2012 09:11

The hairs on my arms are really long. I use a beard trimmer on the closest setting to trim them short, as I think it would be too weird to be completely hairless on my arms. It doesn't take more than a couple of mins and it lasts about a month before it gets long enough to bother me again. I do epilate the backs of my hands and fingers Blush.

ArtVandelay · 17/03/2012 11:52

I just tried it now and it wasn't painful like some body areas. It looks a lot nicer bald! My Asian friend has bald arms and I have never thought that looked strange. Was just last night considering getting them lazered and so if this works okay that will save a lot of money/hassle going to the Doctors and getting zapped.

Maybe dust your arms with a bit of talc, if the hairs are long - the strip/hair comes off easier IME.

theincredibequeenofwands · 17/03/2012 12:55

Hair removal cream has come a long way in the last 15 years! Wink

Do a test patch first thouh!! :)

Squitch · 18/03/2012 13:01

You were right Pinkflipflop the silky mit was useless, unless of course the look you are going for is slightly curly arm hair, which I most definitely wasn't (mmmmm pubey arms) - will buy some immac tomorrow - thanks again all :)

the kids always took the piss out of my arms at school, was called werewolf once Sad.

I trim the hair down with the trimming part of en electric shaver then bleach it.

I couldn't wax my arms, my legs are a mess of ingrown hair scars, really don't want more of them! And re-growth is stubbly as the hair is pretty thick.

Pinkflipflop · 18/03/2012 13:30

what about this if you want it to go away for good?

££ but then your worries are over!!

Squitch · 18/03/2012 14:28

It's tempting, but I think I'll try the 99p immac before the £449.00 hair removal :)

I am only half serious about it bothering me. Obviously I don't want to be known locally as weird hairy woman, but I don't think it's come to that yet. I might embrace the werewolf and start growling at any pupils that mention it again!

On a plus note I have worked today (I better get some brownie points for going above and beyond) and one of the girls said today that I had lovely hair. I am easily pleased :) (though I doubt she was talking about my arm hair as that would just be freaking crazy)

cocolepew · 18/03/2012 14:31

I have the hairiest DD ever, she's only 10 and have been using the cream on her arms and legs since last year. I use one for sensitive skin and she's been fine with it.

EvenBetter · 18/03/2012 16:24

I shaved my arms as a teenager (and also ironed my hair on the hottest setting) and now don't bother. My arms are as hairy as a mans and covered in freckles. I'd look ridiculous with bald arms and a cracking moustache, I'd be fooling no one.

So, no help from me. I've given up!
