Grey hair - growing out colour

After a couple of decades of using semi-permanent dye to hide greys, have decided to try going natural. Five months since last colouring I have 'salt and pepper' roots - about 2", and faded yellowy brown at the ends.

I don't mind the grey hairs - hoping they will look elegant in the end (well that is the intention) but the inconsistency of it doesn't look great; is there any way to disguise this?Hairdresser suggested silver highlights in the ends but am worried that might look like I have gone grey overnight! Another hairdresser suggested lowlights. Wouldn't that lead to another re-growth problem though?

My hair is/used to be mid-brown. It's dead straight and shoulder length.

Anyone out there had this issue? Thanks!

I haven't but my mum went grey, she had a shorter style, and did it by lightening the "base" colour when she had her roots done for a few goes before she "started", then had blocky highlights (blonde, which didn't suit her at all but at least helped blend it in) and then stopped having a base colour, and just some highlights and lowlights, then a couple more cuts and it was out.

Some kind of highlights and/or lowlights will make the transition easier; it may sort of prolong it in a way but make it ever so much better in the meantime.

There's no easy way if you are more than a short pixie cut or spiky style, but all the best.

I juts bit the bullet and grew it out. Was a year or so of horridness, but worth it.

If you can't just tough it out, then platinum blonde highlights, combined with using a tone corrector to take the yellow out will be your best bet

Thanks. Guess I need a creative hairdresser to sort something out as I don't think I can endure a year with the roots and end being different colours!

I was in exactly the same situation as you and took the plunge a few months ago to go blonde and then just let my roots grow through. It took me a looong while to psych myself up to it but it was so worth it. No more horrid brown dye on the bathroom walls, no more faded colour, no more root re-growth etc etc
I love it now, but it has been a long process.:)

So much that I said it twice...

This stuff was a revelation to me: Bumble and Bumble Hair Powder

I've been going grey since I was a teenager and I'd be completely grey now if I didn't colour my hair. I am lazy about getting it done though, and often found myself with the dreaded white stripe of roots down my side part, until the day my hairdresser pulled out a can of this stuff and erased it before my eyes.

It's not a perfect solution; if you used it every day it would get very annoying as it comes off on your nails if you scratch your head (it doesn't drip down your face in the rain, though!) and you can't blithely run your fingers through your hair.

But during the transition period, if you need some quick coverage for a photograph or an event or something like that, it is fantastic stuff. If and when I ever get the guts to do what you're doing (I'm thinking when I hit forty I'll just go for it.. that's only a couple of years away) I think this is what will get me through.

I would describe my hair as medium brown, and the 'blondish' shade is perfect for me.

I should at least say what it is, I guess! It's coloured powder that you spray on like hairspray, and shampoo out. I am never without a can in my handbag!

onehand try charles worthington brown dry shampoo from boots.I think it's just as good as bumble and bumble but so much cheaper.

Thanks, livvy - I will definitely check that out! :)
