is there life after ghds?

my beloved ghds are on their way out, and i'm hoping to take it as an opportunity to stop being such a slave to my straighteners...but i'm terrified! My hair is wavy, not curly enough for the likes of curly girl. I already use morrocan oil, but what else can i do to keep my hair shiny and manageable without daily straightening?

There wasn't for me. It took way too long to get my waves looking smooth and glossy, only for everyone to say it looked better when it was straight. Ironically, the hair itself was in better condition than when I used straighteners, but it didn't look it. I just gave up and let the irons back into my life.

Jackstini · 13/03/2012 11:55

Have you tried sock bun curls?
There was a thread a while back - youtube it & see if you like that look

itdidntworkout · 13/03/2012 11:55

I'm wavy too and stopped GHDs two years ago. The ends of my hair are permanently straight and the regrowth is full of volume. Gradually having the ends chopped off.

I use heated rollers to give the ends some curl and they don't damage my hair. They are from Babyliss and are sort of velvet around the barrel.

I'm thinking about buying my first ghds Smile Did they ruin your hair? Is that because you used them too much? My hair has just a little wave at the bottom. When i used my friends I just did about 6 sections of hair, it took all of 2 minutes. Will my hair survive that little use do you think or should I just not go that route?

daimbardiva · 13/03/2012 12:55

I don't think GHDs ruined my hair - it's always been frizzy. In fact, it seems in better condition when I do straighten it... Roxy I fear that I may be in the same boat as you...

I think I maybe need to talk to my hairdresser and get a cut that embraces waves rather than needs straightened...

have you ever found a make as good as ghd by any chance? before i go and splash out. TIA

daimbardiva · 13/03/2012 14:21

No, never. I have to say that GHDs are utterly wonderful and well worth the cash - I've had mine for 8 years I think

Yes, and better - Cloud 9. They are made by the guy who was behind GHDs, but they are more protective of hair, and, IMHO, more effective.

They were recommended to me by my hairdresser (Daniel Galvin), and as a former GHD addict, I am glad I made the switch.

dinkystinkyandveryverybored · 13/03/2012 17:09

GHDs on sale for £69,99 through the MN co-buy if you want to replace them....

mckenzie · 13/03/2012 19:27

what's the MN co-buy please?

PipCarrier · 13/03/2012 19:42

Babyliss Pro 230 Elegance straighteners far better than ghd's in imho. I now straighten my hair once every three days instead of every day. It stays straight and smooth unlike when I used GHD's, and then on the 2nd and 3rd days has some volume and a slight smooth wave if you know what I mean - a really lovely natural look instead of poker straight.

mckenzie · 13/03/2012 19:43

NoWave, which Cloud9 ones do you use? I have thin hair just on my shoulder.

KatieScarlett2833 · 13/03/2012 19:47

The Babyliss Pro 230's are on half price sale in Boots now.

Mine have been hiding in the boot of my car since Sarturday as DH doesn't understand how bargainicious that is and I already have 2 working sets of straighteners

mckenzie · 13/03/2012 19:53

Katie - would they suit my thin straight shoulder length hair do you think?

NoWave · 13/03/2012 19:55

mckenzie : I use the wide plate ones - I have very thick hair, bra-strap length.

KatieScarlett2833 · 13/03/2012 19:58

My hair is usually pubic and so thick that my hairdresser has been known to gather round the apprentices for show and tell when I frequent the salon. It takes 4 hours for a half set of highlights. I have shares in frizz-ese.

However, my Babyliss bad boys tame my mane into complete shiny, bouncy submission. Hence the reason for buying multiple pairs, I have the fear that Babyliss will discontinue them.Have tried GHD's but they are not as good with my impossible hair.

Thin, straight, shoulder length should be an absolute doddle IMO.

mckenzie · 13/03/2012 20:02

Ive just realised, I said I have straight hair yet I'm looking at buying straighteners Grin.

mckenzie · 13/03/2012 20:03

huh! I just went on line at Boots to buy the Babyliss ones and hey are out of stock!! Will call my local branch tomorrow - fingers crossed.

RoxyRobin · 13/03/2012 20:20

The BaByliss Pro 230's are also £39.99 at Argos and at John Lewis (free delivery).

mckenzie · 13/03/2012 20:31

thank you. Ive just reserved at Argos for collection tomorrow.

KatieScarlett2833 · 13/03/2012 20:35

Mine were £27.99 in Boots on Saturday.

RoxyRobin · 13/03/2012 20:40

Really? Best try Boots first then before picking them up at Argos, mckenzie - though if you have a John Lewis store handy they will price-match Boots' offer (but not online).

RoxyRobin · 13/03/2012 20:43

MN Co-Buy

mckenzie · 13/03/2012 22:04

thanks Roxy - unfortunately the offer on GHDs has finished. I'm not doing very well am I?
