Curly hair

I have long very straight hair, which will NOT curl, no matter what I do (well it will but then the weight pulls it out in about half an hour). If I plait my hair wet I get a wave, but I want CURLS! Have tried the sock bun thing, but it just made me feel like someone who was shit at styling their hair, but from the 80's. I have now got my hair in rags and was feeling pretty optimistic - how can it not work? However, someone has just told me that it really really hurts when you take them out - is it true? Please tell me it isn't true!

The rag rolling technique can hurt as you are meant to sleep in it and your head sorta has a pully painful feeling in the scalp. It does lessen as the day goes on but when I do this I massage my head as best I can before I pull the rags out. Just try to be as gentle as possible. Have you tried hot rollers that come in a case for home use? You get the pins and a variety of rollers and put in hair. Depending on how much hair you have, how quickly you can do it where you are going you will ned to gauge when to use these. They work good as you do get a set CURLY CURL but you have to use hair spray after (as with all curl styles). Curling wands are also good to try?!
I also find that curl hair when its a day old (unless you get very greasy hair when just washed is probably best).
You could ask your stylist to thin your hair so its not so heavy and curls will last longer.
OR major sacrifice get a perm at your hairdressers. This will only work best if you have longish hair with no layers shorter than your jawline and not bleached or more than 40 highlighted.
Hope this helps?

I sleep in my rag curls. I've been practising doing them a couple of times. It doesn't hurt when you take them out. All you're doing is untying a knot. You will look like Shirley Temple when you take them out but fear not, you need to brush it out slightly to shape it.

I DO look like Shirley Temple - perhaps trying this on a Sunday night when I need to be at work in an hour was not the greatest of ideas. Brushing it is just making it get fluffier and fluffier. My dd has taken one look at me (she's 6) and said 'that looks really stupid'. Right, just off to wash my hair :(

If you want permanent curls then get a digital perm. Check my profile.

Hazle,

where did you get your digital perm? I've been looking to have it done for a few months now. xx

HazleNutt · 12/03/2012 10:14

Kuala Lumpur while on holiday, sorry that's probably not helpful..

Regarding the perm that HazleNutt is mentioning. This is the one that I meant but I could not find pics of it. My friend had hers done at a stylist in Manchester but with more of curl to it. This is probably the best thing to do in terms of the health of the hair and your stress levels as it seems maybe you getting frustrated at it and your hair wont appreciate being ragged about all the time!

I found one in London, in case anyone wants to know: jhairandbeauty.co.uk
