Sock bun curls. Has anyone tried this?

I've seen the video for the sock bun and I've made several attempts but I think that my hair isn't long enough to obtain significant results. I only get a flick of a curl at the ends and they don't last very long. I'm interested in knowing whether this has worked for anyone here. What type of hair do you have and what sort of length is it?

Mine is slightly past the shoulders. I can just about roll a sock bun in my hair but I think it needs to wrap the doughnut several times before curling it properly.

I'm tying it tonight after having hair too short for years, and have just grown it! Will reports back tomorrow!

trying

Never heard of this - can you explain?

valiumredhead · 09/03/2012 09:44

Have a look on youtube - lots of clips to show you how. I'm hoping it will work on my hair.

I want to try this too. I have just past shoulders layered hair - could it work on that? ATM I just use curl creme and twist my hair into curls iywim then diffuse dry it. But it never gives me the 'right' kind of loose curls that i want. Maybe the sock bun method will be better?

Boogie, did you make sure your hair was damp and maybe put a bit of curl spray etc in it before you did the bun? Might make the curls last longer?

boogiewoogie · 09/03/2012 10:52

Tried it several times, sometimes sprayed to make it damp and easier to roll into. I think it's the length though, also got a few layers. Certainly worth trying again though.

Devora go on youtube and search for Sock bun curls by Loepsie. Hers turn out incredible.

I tried it on my long straight layered hair and it made me look like a 1980s supermodel like Christie Brinkley or summat with BIG hair (obvs not the model bit!) for about 5 minutes, and then went straight back to its natural state - as it always does whatever styling products/techniques I use.

Squitch · 09/03/2012 10:59

Bibbity that's exactly what my hair does. I had big hopes for the sock bun as well, my hair just wants to be straight

The trick is to make sure your hair is damp enough but not wet. I use a styling spray as well. Sometimes two or three smaller buns are better than one big one.

AWimbaWay · 09/03/2012 11:48

I've never done a sock bun, but used to use rags alot, the key with that was to start with really quite damp hair, but to ensure hair was bone dry before removing the rags. If my hair was even slightly damp due to me being impatient and removing them early the curls would just drop out.

boogiewoogie · 09/03/2012 14:16

I've been practising rag curls and they work very well for my hair as long as I brush them out a bit so that I don't look like Shirley Temple. I saw the sock bun video and thought it was such a simple and effective way to curl my hair if I wanted a bit of volume. I'll try again another time with spray.

My daughter (21) has long hair and she quite often does this:
washes it then puts about 4 plaits in while its still wet, leaves it to dry (sometimes overnight) then when she undoes it all theres loads of rippling loose curls.
She does use loads of spray though !!!!

Devora · 09/03/2012 23:01

How long does your hair have to be for this to work? Mine is shoulder length, with layers, and I'm not sure I'll have enough of a topknot to work with.

amistillsexy · 09/03/2012 23:04

I think it works better on shorter hair if you use a smaller sock, like a baby sock.

I have longish (bra starp length) hair and use a sock of DH's, and it works well for me.

boogiewoogie · 09/03/2012 23:04

It's a pain to do if you have layers. My hair is only slightly pass shoulder length but I can just about get it into a bun with no stray hairs. However, I think it needs to be longer if you want to twist round it several times

I did it on DD (using child's sock) and it worked well - better curls on the sides than the back, though - and held for a few hours. Her hair is about halfway between shoulder and waist length.
