Wedding guest hat or fascinator?

This is the first wedding that I have been invited to that specifies a hat or fascinator. My friend is going to hire a hat. I'm not sure what to go for.

Are fascinators naff or not? Are they just for young girls?

I have a teal coloured dress and jacket to wear and I am quite short and small.

My hair is light brown and shoulder length.

Please advise me and tell me what shops to look in.

Thank you

Why are fascinators naff exactly?

I've always gone for a fascinator over a hat because I've got a bloody big head and no hats ever fit meBlush

Also hats cost a bloody fortune and weddings are expensive enough anyway, even if you are just a random guest.

it's MN nonsense that fascinators are naff... some thread cod started probably, years ago, and it's stuck. some of them are naff, some are not.

I'm a regular at the races and plate-style "hatinators" suit most people.

Fascinators can look naff if they are all feathers or tacky netting.

Certain hats however can be very ageing.

I don't like them because I generally don't like being adorned with feathers and bows, you can get plain hats so thats what I prefer. I don't generally think they look good on other people either.

the assumption btw that all hats are ineffably elegant and all fascinators are tacky merely betrays that people don't actually wear either very often.

They're all naff

The beauty of a fascinator is that you can take it off and put it in your bag without messing up your hair - neither of which can be said of a hat. Whether they are naff or not surely depends on the item in question - if it suits you and complements your outfit what's the problem? I think they have probably gained a reputation for naffness due to being worn by people who would look naff whatever they were wearing (Princess Beatrice springs to mind).

What kind of bride and groom specify headwear on the invitation? Shock

TitWillow · 12/03/2012 20:41

Is it a religious ceremony? Some churches require that women wear headwear of some type.

I say wear what you want and what you think suits you.
