Styling products for curly hair

My hair is naturally curly with a fair amount of frizz thrown in. Due to the frizz I have been straightening it for about the last 10 years. I am thinking of embracing the curl but I'm not sure what product/s to use so that I can let it dry naturally without becoming a frizzy mess. I am in Australia and humidity is a big issue for my hair.

Any suggestions most appreciated!

The Be Curly range by Aveda is amazing. Sorts my ginormous frizzy barnet out a treat when I CBA spending hours straightening it.

CardiCorgi · 07/03/2012 08:06

I'm reading with interest as I have the same problem. Which bits of the Be Curly range do you use and how do you use it? You would think that after so many years of having curly hair I would know what to do with it, but no, still clueless.

I did use Frizz-Ease which kept my hair under control, but I've stopped for the moment as I wondered if the silicones were building up on my hair and making it even more dull than usual.

willybreeder · 07/03/2012 08:24

The best thing I've done is to follow the curly girl regime, there's a website (can't link) explaining it all and a UK site with recommendations for products you can easily buy that don't contain silicone which is the worst thing in the long run for frizz. Good luck!

I would just try a good dollop of hair moisturiser. You can get them on the internet. The one I use comes from Israel. You apply it much like a face moisturiser and then leave it. Quick, simple and effective.

I've recently dropped silcones and sulfates from my hair products and my hair is very much improved (I also had about 5 inches cut off the length). For styling I use a drop of argan oil and a small blob of conditioner, my hair is soft and shiny, the curls hold well and I don't really get any frizz. Admittedly this is in damp and chilly South Yorkshire, Australian conditions might be a wee bit different Wink

StealthNinja · 07/03/2012 09:25

Thank you all for the replies :).

Ohdear, I've just been having a look at the Aveda curl enhancer, it's pricey but the reviews look positive.

LaCoccinelle, what brand of products do you use that don't have silicone? I aspire to soft and shiny hair!

Off to read up on the curly girl method.

At the moment I use Naked shampoo and conditioner for curly hair. Generally speaking organic stuff from the health food shop will be sulfate and silicone free, although you may have to spend ages reading labels in the shop just to check (and feeling very silly while you do it). I think it's the oil that's helping with the softness, I was using gel, as per the CG 'low poo' routine, and although my hair looked nice it didn't feel as nice.

BelleEnd · 07/03/2012 09:48

I tried the curly girl method and it just made my hair look as if it needed a good wash :(

cupcakeandtea · 07/03/2012 11:16

Another curly haired girl here. Have a shelf literally heaving with products purporting to be for curly hair but after 20 years of trial and error, I always wash my hair in Kerastase Oleo Curl, condition with Vo5 nourish me gently (go through a bottle a fortnight!), put a small dollop of Moroccan oil on after combing through, then VO5 mega hold mousse and while still damp curl sections with Charles Worthington leave in conditioner.

Once a week I put bog standard olive oil on my hair, leave it on overnight and wash it off the next day. I never ever blow dry my hair.

I love my curly hair but by god it's taken a long time to get it right. Looks alot like SJP in the earlyish days of Sex and the City but humidity is not a curly haired girl's friend!

LesserOfTwoWeevils · 07/03/2012 12:39

Another vote for the Curly Girls method here. I've been doing it for a few months and I get regular compliments on my curls now.

Emo76 · 07/03/2012 13:07

depends on the type of curls you have. i have tight ringlets. use pantene smooth and sleek, not always shampooing before conditioner, and tigi curls rock curl amplifier. have tried loads of other things inc aveda and frizz ease and boots pink curl cream none of which worked for me.

CardiCorgi · 08/03/2012 08:50

Next stupid question, what do you do with your hair overnight and does it look ok the next day? I can just about get mine looking good after it's been washed, but the next day it is usually a lot frizzier. I put it in a plait to sleep in and for sports as having all that hair round my face would get on my nerves.

BelleEnd · 08/03/2012 08:54

I'm exactly the same as you cardi- If I'm not straightening it, I have to wash it daily, which makes the frizz worse.

LaCoccinelle · 08/03/2012 17:11

I tie my hair in a very loose bun right on top of my head at night, it's usually ok for the next day, if not I spritz it with water until it looks ok. If it looks really awful on day 2 I just wet it in the shower, wrap it in a towel for 5 minutes afterwards and then let it dry naturally. I find a bit of length helps with 2nd day hair - when my hair was short I had to wet and style it every day or I ended up looking like Kramer form Seinfeld.

sozzledchops · 08/03/2012 17:24

Have used John Freida's Frizzease range, mostly the mouse and the serum. Tried a variety of others but none of them seem to be anywhere near as good.

LesserOfTwoWeevils · 08/03/2012 17:59

I pineapple mine at night?put it in a loose ponytail on top of my head so I'm not sleeping on the curls and they don't get squashed.

Lyftiduft · 08/03/2012 21:40

Another vote for the Naked range, I've just switched and after a few washes my curls are back to being shiny, bouncy and easier to control. Much softer too :) Next step is having a few inches chopped off tomorrow afternoon and at least 30 mins toddler free while it's done

giveitago · 09/03/2012 10:37

Kind of wavy with a few proper curls if you can find them in the frizz. I don't use serums as they weigh my hair down with more frizz.

I let my hair dry naturally and if it comes out OK with products (a variety and then finished off with vitapoint to tame) then fine and if not I just manage to tie it back (this is most days).

I've got very very thick hair - what styles do you guys have as I'm convinced I've never had a style that actually suits my hair type or face type (roundish face with strong features and plus I wear glasses). I don't paint an attractive picture.

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 09/03/2012 10:42

I spent years straightening my hair as I had no idea how to 'do' my curls.
Then I splashed out £1.19 on Boots Curl Creme, pink gloop in a tub, and it's amazing. Just scrunch a little bit on damp hair, then either dry naturally or diffuse.
I shampoo with John Freida Frizz Ease for curly hair, always on offer in Superdrug.
Now I wish I'd done it years ago!

giveitago · 09/03/2012 10:50

boots curl creme - does it banish the frizz and separate curls? Bloody hell -I'm off there now.
