Alternatives to commercial shampoo?

Okay, so now that everyone is raving about the oil cleansing method, i was wondering if any of you beauty gurus know of an alternative to shampoo.

I have been on Google and I found a method using firs diluted baking soda and then diluted vinegar. Has anyone tried this? I would like to try but I have veeery dry ends from sun damage and I think this probably won't cut it.

Any suggestions?

If you have split ends from recent sun damage you might need to cut them off and start again. All the products in the world wont seal a split hair back up, contrary to what the adverts tell us.

If the ends are just a bit dry I found solid shampoos and conditioners better.
Ones from Lush suit my hair at the moment (brace yourself for being bombarded by overly-friendly staff and an assult on your nasal passages!).

Also any product that avoids parabens and/or sulphates are thought to be better for you and stop so much build up.

I'm not brave enough for the oil method - I just can't get through the pain barrier of my hair feeling vile before it gets better. Would be interested to know how you get on with the soda/ vinegar method....

Thanks Lorna.

I know split ends won't be sealed back up, if only!! I am actually a bit annoyed at my hairdresser as I told her that, although ideally I wanted my hair long enough for a pony tail, I repeatedly said "it you see that it's still damaged, please cut it shorter", which she didn't do, so this last haircut was a complete waste of money... Next time I am going to go for at least 2 inches shorter, which will also mean I can wash it everyday and it will dry in a reasonable amount of time (I have a 5 month old ds, so not much time for hairdryers)

Still unsure whether to give it a go without "proper" shampoo, I might want to invest in a nice hat first....
