as in fake tan? I get the same results with st moritz as I do with a professional spray tan but I've perfected my technique. If you decide to diy you need to:
Set aside plenty of time and make sure you can hide from the world the next day (incase it goes wrong!!!!)
Put out some clothes you can wear that are loose, old, and wont mark your skin (I actually bought a nana style cotton button front house coat for that purpose)
Prep your skin - exfoliate your skin to within an inch of your life! Dry off fully and lightly moisturise wrinkly areas (knees, palms, heels etc).
Apply in light coats and blend quickly (always wear latex gloves!).
Air dry stood like a cowboy for as long as poss.
As I said before - I use st moritz (its about £2 in my local home bargins) but if you want a more professional formula:
Beau Bronze are great for beginners as they do a very light formula
Sunbelievable are the newest kids on the block and very well recieved in the press - think geri halliwell colouring
Fake Bake give an american glow
St Tropez is the classic
Vita Liberata is the celeb fave
or you could just use the rimmel wash off formula - really good unless you are in a club and therefore likely to have a drink spilled down your legs, or want it to tan before a holiday.
Hope that helps - I hate to see posts go unanswered!!
