what does your 9yr old boy wear?

my son was upset this weekend that he didn't like his clothes but he couldn't tell me how he wants to dress, up until now i've dressed him from boden with a couple of things from next and gap, the whole online shopping so easy, he did say around xmas time he didn't want to dress the same as his 5yr old brother, so i've made sure they don't wear the same thing on the same day. Hes chosen from the boden catalogue before and worn the item and then said he doesn't like it, i guess that means someone else didn't like it. its unlikey we will get the chance to look around the shops together, and i've not really noticed what his friends wear they look quite scruffy to me like they have old clothes on. He is very skinny for his age, has to have trousers with an adjustable waist, usually get him the slim fit from boden jeans.

I would like to get him a hoody, jeans, tops/tees and trainers i guess clarks shoes and trainers are wrong too. I'm not keen on sports wear or black for him. Any suggestions/links please

My ds isn't fussy but he looked through a Boden catalogue that came through the door and declared everything 'babyish.'

At 9 you need to start letting them chose what they want to wear, never mind if you like it Wink

Ds wears jeans, t shirts and hoodies - no stripes ( again, babyish ) trainers. In the summer long shorts and t shirts, if they have a skull and cross bones on them somewhere then all the better Grin

imnotmymum · 05/03/2012 12:01

jeans, hoodies some shirts if have hoods Nikes ... that it really !! He uber casual and loves Saltrock stuff he keeps that stuff in a seperate drawer ?? how weird seriously let them pick out stuff my DS is skinny and M&S FIT great as do an 8 long

Almondroca · 05/03/2012 12:13

Mine needed new trainers recently and it was the first time it was hard to get some because of his opinions!! He's got wide feet, so Clarks would have been the best option...but no.

I find H&M good for my boys - most of it seems to have 'cool' built in so I haven't gone too wrong getting stuff there - except stripes which he doesn't like anymore.

He likes anything orange, skinny jeans (H&M do adjustable waists), zip up hoodies, Gap t-shirts seem acceptable. But most of all his Sainsburys grey track suit bottoms.

kitkat1967 · 05/03/2012 12:15

another vote for H&M here - skinny jeans (got nice grey ones from there), check shirts, converse copies for feet. And my 8 year old is very partial to his (fake) leather jacket!!

Sparklegeek · 05/03/2012 12:24

Was just about to suggest H & M so another vote from me! Their sizing comes up v small though. Admittedly my boys are all big for their age, but when I see what they think a 14 + boy should be fitting into it makes me laugh! So my 11 year old has just got the stuff I ordered for his 13 year-old brother. I guess Swedish boys are smaller than English ones (mine are very slim, just tall, but the clothes are small all over it seems). Oh and one last thing - don't order from them if you're in a hurry, the stock all comes from a Swedish warehouse & I've waited 6 weeks before Shock

thanks for the quick replies, yes perhaps the boden is getting babyish, it washes up so nice though. He does have alot of strips, even a red boden top with stripes and a skull which i was rather pleased with and he liked, this is what he wore recently for non uniform. The problem with him choosing is i don't think he really cares or knows what to choose, he just gets upset when someone at school comments kids are so cruel, apparently his clarks school shoes are wrong because they have velcro and not laces.

Today i got him a dark grey hoody with eyes and teeth on the hood, i don't like it so that could be a good thing, its from gap outlet so can't link. And another striped tee, perhaps i need to return that having read this.

My DS is 9 and likes to choose his own clothes.
Have just ordered him ome teal skinny jeans. He also likes polo shirts and hoodies.
He's desperate for a Superdry hoodie, but fortunately is too small.

jen127 · 05/03/2012 12:37

My Ds9 is sports mad and live's in track suit bottoms and football shirts and hoodies.
On the days that I object to this ( about once a month) Skinny jeans from H&M or next, and hoodies from Next.

Maybetimeforachange · 05/03/2012 12:39

Anther one for H&M here. He will only wear blue jeans though, no other trousers, so has a combination of slim and baggy ones, a couple of hooded cardigans, plain and college style, lots of H&M tops and a bunch of plain ones which he wears under summer Tshirts. He also likes checked shirts to wear open with Tshirts underneath and converse or hi tops on his feet. In the summer he wears lots of checked shorts, I got them in primark last year, with plain Tshirts, polo shirts at a push, or cargo / sweat shorts with H&M Tshirts. He won't wear sandals at the moment so havaiana flip flops or converse shoes with trainer socks. Tbh I don't even look anywhere other than H&M for him anymore unless GAP has 30% off or if I happen to pass something in Primark. He has also declared Boden to be far too babyish but is happy in stripes.

fluffyhamster · 05/03/2012 12:41

DS2 (9) like to dress a bit like his 12 year old brother Hmm

HM - checks and stripes
GAP - plain greys/ the odd skull etc
M&S plain jeans seem OK, but nothing too fussy!
I also find stuff in Debenhams (John Rocha, Jasper Conran Junior J etc) good
Animal brand stuff in sale
A bit of Next

We're not big on sports wear being worn except for sport, but he does have a Nike zip up top. Haven't had any problems with shoes...

anchovies · 05/03/2012 12:42

What does everyone do about shoes? Ds has wide feet and hates the clarks casual shoes. Thanks for this thread btw, having the same dilemmas at the moment and hadn't thought of H&M

valiumredhead · 05/03/2012 12:44

YY animal brand in the sale!

Ds is in Clarks shoes still - thank goodness! Mind you we have school shoes and trainers and wells - that's it!

ggirl · 05/03/2012 12:49

My 9yr old ds is also very slim
He picked out these twisted chinos from next and I can't get them off him

He wears polos from h&m or primark and a zipped boden hoodie

takeonboard · 05/03/2012 12:49

My DS declared Boden and Gap to be "babyish" at about 8.
He is now 10 and wants to dress head to toe in Superdry and Jack Wills Hmm but will deign to wear Next, H&M and Zara but ONLY if they are plain (no logo's are allowed unless they are Superdry or Jack Wills, natch!) and absolutely no skull and crossbones, skateboarders etc which all boys clothes seem to be covered in.
Next have fab coloured skinny jeans at the moment which he loves, oh and he does love a 'twisted seam' Grin

cece · 05/03/2012 12:56

Mine chooses a lot of his own clothes now too.

He likes;
jeans - plain ish ones - either from M&S or Debenhams or Primark
tshirts - he likes a polo shirt with a collar or black t shirt or football shirt
hoodies - but only if he chooses them, as the ones I choose don't go down well unless they are plain black/grey
trainers - still getting away with Clarks ones at mo and crocs for summer
shirt - checked shirt done up with just top button a la Aiden off of Friday Download. Smile

TheOriginalNutcracker · 05/03/2012 12:57

Wow, my ds is 9 and couldn't give a monkeys doo dahs what he is wearing.

Maybetimeforachange · 05/03/2012 12:58

He has some Nike hi-tops which he loves and I hate and some Converse shoes. I haven't bought him Clarke casual shoes for years and he has now declared Geox to be far too uncool. For the occasional time he needs to look a bit smarter I bought some Next desert boots for him and next year I think that I will get him some timberland boots.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 05/03/2012 13:00

Ds1 is very quirky in his style so I let him choose.

He loves Boden trousers, the brightly coloured or camouflage patterned ones, the brighter the betterConfused, he won't wear jeans! He won't wear tops with pictures, only plain or stripes! Tops I mostly get from Gap, a few from Next.

fruitcorner · 05/03/2012 13:02

Anything with camouflage on it or H&M stuff, but not with stripes unfortunately. Shoes, he used to like geox now likes shoes with laces particularly converse type but I don't like him wearing these all the time.

Labootin · 05/03/2012 13:02

Whatever's on the top of the clean clothes pile.

Lots and lots of H&M
And Converse!

pinktortoise · 05/03/2012 13:50

DS wears a lot of sport stuff as he is mostly playing sport all weekend. When required to look smarter he has jeans, polo T shirts , checked shirts and hoodies. A lot of h and m.
He has school shoes in the week still clarks or geox etc. At weekend he has trainers but proper adidas or Nike etc. Usually can persuade him to get grey or black trainers as I prefer them to White. Summer has converse.
He is interested in what he wears and if going out to eat or party will insist that a shirt is required plus hair wax, leather bracelet and a squirt of aftershave!

fluffyhamster · 05/03/2012 13:50

Primark good for Superdry-style T-shirts e.g. grey/ navy which are then worn with an open checked shirt over the top.
