Can I have a bit of help with hair and make up for a dinner dance?

It's semi-formal apparently Confused. I've had a nose at the pictures from last year to see what they were wearing, and it seems to be a mixture of floor length and cocktail dresses and everything in between. Hair up and down.

So, I've bought this dress, which looks like it will fit in quite well, but I have no idea about hair and make up.

I was thinking that hair up might be better, so you could see the chiffon panel at the back, but I don't know (or how I'd put it up, I don't think a bun would cut it!). If it helps, my hair's browny-red, straight and 3-4 inches below my shoulders.

And make-up, I usually just wear a dab of foundation and maybe some eyeliner.

As you might have guessed, I don't normally go out all dolled up, so any help would be received ever so gratefully!

And if you've read all that, thank you ever so much Grin

Please?

And do you like the dress? I e-mailed my sister to ask what she thought of it yesterday, and she's just replied saying you'd have to be 5'10" and wearing killer heels . I'm 5'5" and was planning on wearing black court shoes for the meal and switching to dance shoes like this.

Aargh, have I chosen completely the wrong thing?

I like the dress, and I think the shoes you linked to would be fine to go with it all night - but maybe in black or pewter (if you wanted to save having to cart a pair of shoes around all night with you.

How long have you got til the do? If you have a local hairdressing college nearby, you could get your hair and make up done cheaply perhaps?

fluffylegs · 04/03/2012 19:46

I'm pretty sure if you could get someone else to do it you'd feel happier. It's hard to advise from scratch about something like this. Good idea RE local colleges / hairdresser / makeup artist.

fluffylegs · 04/03/2012 19:49

It's a lovely dress. You don't need an up do. A good blow dry wd work or even curling tongs to get tousled waves.

You don't nec need more makeup but to keep things v simple i would suggest foundation blusher and mascara.

Two weeks, so a bit of time. I just had a slight panic about it!

I'll have a look for hairdressers/make up places, didn't think of that Smile. Should I have an idea of what I'm after, or just ask them what they think?

The shoes have suede soles Olympic, so dance floor only unfortunately. It's a pain having to take two pairs, but the difference dancing in 'proper' shoes is definitely worth it.

If I go out to a do, I book a make over at Clinique in Boots, you'll need to buy a lip gloss but it's a great way to look marv for few £'s

MrsJoeDuffy · 04/03/2012 23:37

ooh I love the dress, I nearly bought it yesterday. I guess have it taken up an inch if you feel it is too long?

I know what it is like trying to glam up when you're not usually a makeup gal!

fluffylegs · 04/03/2012 23:43

Re hair and makeup - they will have ideas. You just say what you'd like to achieve.

Clinique staff are not trained makeup artists so its a bit of a lottery.

fluffylegs · 04/03/2012 23:45

Though Enjoy I'm sure you always look
great - that wasn't supposed to sound inflammatory!

TheBeanAndTheBee · 05/03/2012 08:58

Cup of Jo blog has some really lovely hair ideas (with tutorials if you are thinking of doing it yourself)

ScatterChasse · 05/03/2012 10:55

Oh thank you, I'll have a look at all those Smile.

No offence taken Fluffylegs Grin. I can get away without make up I hope, I may just look like crap usually and I can do stage (see it from the gallery, plastered on with a trowel) type make up, it's the 'middle way' I struggle with!
