Eyeliner and concealer

I use a brown/black pencil eyeliner just on the outer 1/3 of my top and bottom lids. But it tends to melt over the day. Any recommendations on a liquid eyeliner? I tried one in the past, but couldn't control putting it on at all, and it had kind of a purple tinge to it - I want something warmer.

Also, I have the beginnings of bags under my eyes. I have a shadow (not a wrinkle yet), which doesn't follow parallel to my eye, but runs from my tear duct diagonally across my cheek (not all the way, but far enough!) Skin under the eyes is bright and wrinkle-free, it's just this shadow that's annoying me. Is this a job for concealer? If so, any recommendations for a concealer that would be good for pale skin?

Try using a powder eyeshadow on top of your eye liner pencil or use a wet eyeshadow with a fine eyeliner brush (I find if I wet down my eyeshadow and apply with a brush it is the easiest way of getting a flicky liner look and it never travels - so that method should work for how you wear your liner).

Definately a concealer job (though sleep and drining water help but who gets to do much of either?Grin).I use mally cosmetics cancellation concealer system for my black circles but it is totally out of stock in the pale shades in the uk and not likely to be back until next month. Bobbi Brown creamy concealer and booiing concealer from benefit are quite good alternatives - full coverage without being cakey. I would definately go to a beauty counter and try them out though - I find concealer is just as personal as perfume or a handbag...

I cannot use liquid eyeliner at all and have found that it fades anyway so all the effort goes to waste after not very long.

Gel eyeliners are great and the maybelline one is brilliant for everyday wear. It is not very expensive and a little goes a long way. The brush is also easy to use and the eyeliner is easy to clean off your skin and the brush.

I have terrible dark circles since having my DD due to lack of sleep and find rimmel's match perfection to be a great everyday concealer and possibly the best I have tried. I am very fair so it is hard to find a concealer that suits but this one seems to blend very well.

Both products are compact and easy to apply.

I used to use black eyeshadow to line my eyes, but dry for a smoky look, and it was by far the easiest way of lining my eyes.

I never tried it wet as mrsmartin has suggested but it sounds like a good idea to me.

I think sleek eyeshadow is best for this as their shadows are so richly pigmented.

mrsmartin · 03/03/2012 01:21

I have heard from other MN's that sleek eyeshadows are really good...I have mac ones (have had them 4 or 5 years and still not hit the bottom of the palette!!) but sleek will be my next purchase (think it is exclusive to superdrug - very cheap prices yay!!). I use a brush like this one. I used to use gel eyeliner (bobbi brown one has been around yonks and is bulletproof) everyday but eyeshadow gives the same look but is cheaper and easier to correct if you cock it up (for some reason dh has a habit of coming up and kissing me/pinching my bum when I am doing eyeliner/mascara/putting my hair up - whenever it is inconvenient really!!!).

Also - I meant to say before but make sure that any brown you put near your eyes doesn't have any red in it - it will make you look tired. Navy is a brilliant alternative - it makes the whites of your eyes look whiter (it is my trick when I have to go to work on 3 hours sleep - concealer, navy liner and pale pink pencil on the inner eyeline and inner corner=9hours of sleep lookWink).

mrsmartin when you say put powder eyeshadow over the eyeliner, do you mean trace over the eyeliner? I'm not really sure about using eyeshadow at all to line, as am thinking it would come out quite thick? I'm just using a thin line at the edges to widen my eyes.

Will try out the gel eyeliner tomorrow. Quite excited about trying the concealers. I think that will make a big difference.

yes - you can use eyeshadow as a setting powder by putting it on either wet or try and tracing over the line. I get a much thinner line with shadow than I do with anything else. With gel eyeliner make sure you use a good quality brush and that you flatten it off by brushing it against the inside of the lid from the pot - you are better off having less on the brush and building the line up than trying to do it all in one go.

I would hate to be without my concealer (that said I just spent 3 days at MIL's without my brow palette and I felt naked without my brows!!!!!). I hope you find one that suits but I urge you to actually try it under the eye...the one I use is perfect for under the eye but doesn't really work elsewhere, whereas the things I used to use to cover blemishes (touch wood I haven't had a spot for a year now) don't work under my eyes.

cousinviolet · 03/03/2012 04:18

Sorry to keep asking questions, but does are there any more recommendations for an eyeliner brush?

I second using wet eyeshadow as eyeliner - just use a flat brush, it works great to make you look like you ve thicker lashes if you can do it on the underside of the lashes (is the bit near the eye if that makes sense). Just use a flat brush and kind of dab it along the eyeline .....
I also have a dark navy shadow that i use some days instead of brown and it s nice too.
Gel liners take a bit of practice (check out the u tube videos ) but they really are great - I have mac brown that s about 4 years old (golly .. i know i shouldn't !!!) but it hasnt used up yet and i use it lots. Eyeryone raves about the bobbi brown gel eyeliner
It s the eyeliner brush that s important IMO - MAC do a good one or I got mine in Sephora a few years ago ... a tip a makeup artist gave me once when the hairs of it were going a bit awry was to use hair straightener on low setting to tame the bristles back into place,

cocobongo · 03/03/2012 12:10

i bought this a few days ago, and it is great. first time i have been able to apply a decent line, and it stays in place all day. i bought the black, but there are different colours.

to be honest my eyeliner brushes were pretty cheap - I have a flat one from ruby and millie that was about £13 that I never really use as the skinny angled liner brushes (like the elf one I linked to earlier up the thread) are much easier to use ime and give a skinnier line (you can make it fatter). Mine a brand called qds (or something similar) and I got them in asda (I have one long handles and one short) for a couple of pounds per brush - they sell the brand in superdrug too though. I never really spend alot on eyeshadow/eyeliner/brow brushes as I find ruby and millie/this qds brand do them well and do them cheap. However, my face brushes (foundation/blusher etc) are either quite expensive or came with the piece of make up as it is specially designed to work with it (eg bare minerals). I wash them all once a week in baby shampoo and they last ages.

cousinviolet · 04/03/2012 20:29

Ok, so I got the Booiing concealer and a fine eyeliner brush and some black eyeshadow.

The concealer is a great colour match and doesn't look cakey or obvious when it's on, but I'm not convinced it's making a huge difference. Maybe I'm being too critical, I don't know.

The eyeshadow-eyeliner is working pretty well. It's fairly easy to put on (although I could still do with more practice) and is definitely staying on better than eyeliner. I'm not very consistent at making the paste up though. Sometimes it's "bitty", other times too watery. Will continue to practice!

I litterally just wet the brush and swirl it on the eyeshadow - what eyeshadow brand did you get?

cousinviolet · 04/03/2012 21:52

MAC. It's not a big problem. I'll figure it out.

Ladies...just in case you are after the 'wet eyeliner look': I have found that Lancome's Artliner (a black felt tip pen) does not smudge or come off. Ever. Until you remove it that is. Brilliant. I put it on yesterday at 9am and together with double wear foundation applied over a primer, I had impeccable make up until midnight. Takes a bit getting used to the felt tip pen though.

LittlebearH · 04/03/2012 22:17

I CAN HELP!!!!
Liquid eyeliner - Collection 2000 it is in an inkwell shaped bottle. I have tried pretty much all ranges..up to Chanel.

It is the cheapest and it doesnt blot onto your eyelid. I have pale skin and find eyeshadows and pencil melt away.

It is brilliant stuff.
I am a fan of expensive eyeshadows and foundation (love Estee Lauder) and Benefit does THE best concealer. It stays put most of the day. But cannot rate Collection 2000's liquid eyeliner more highly.

cousinviolet · 04/03/2012 22:55

Thanks ladies. Am keen to try a few different things, and Collection2000 is cheap!
