I have been considering dental implants for the past few years. I hate my teeth (and always have), i hav never taken great pride in them as they are wonky and now in poor condition too. I understand they are very expensive but the way I feel plays a massive part in my daily life. Has anyone had implants and if so would you recommend them?

My dad had one as he had one of his front teeth knocked out. It was quite a lengthy process and expensive but he thought it was great and it certainly looked good.

My mum has two - she kept smoking so had complications but now that is sorted the implants look good and are preventing her remaining teeth moving around etc.

do you def. need implants rather than veneers?

justhavintheone · 02/03/2012 20:20

defo go for a good consultation and consider crowns or veneers in the first instance, implants and brill but need to be looked after really well, oral hygiene must be impeccable. go for it, you will love results x

I have crowns which were ££££££ but look AMAZING. Along with having braces and my teeth whitened, my teeth look a billion times better for a lot less than a mouthful of veneers would be. But it depends on your circumstances and what's wrong with your teeth, you know?

cuddlymanatee · 02/03/2012 20:26

*mouthful of implants, even. Veneers are much less expensive than implants.

Londonlass80 · 02/03/2012 20:33

Thank you for the replies. Maybe crowns are an option, I haven't researched them as an option. I understand implants are very expensive and not a quick fix but I can't see myself being truly happy without a whole new smile. I will look into crowns more. Thanks again.

Cuddlymanatee, would you mind telling me how long have you had yours and what was the deciding factor in you getting them? I understand if you'd rather not discuss.

Oh I'm always happy to discuss! My crowns are 3 and 4 years old. I had braces beforehand for 18 months (they were behind the teeth).

For me it was getting married - I got my teeth whitened for the wedding and was pleased by the difference but it did highlight that the problem wasn't the colour of my teeth if you know what I mean! I was very conscious of being photographed and kept my mouth closed when I smiled and threw away the wedding photos which had my teeth on show in them, which was sad.

Then I needed a root canal and a crown and asked the dentist if they could improve my front teeth (I was thinking of veneers really), and ended up with the braces and crowns. I am very pleased with my teeth now - they are not perfect but I am happy to smile with my teeth, if that makes sense!

Londonlass80 · 02/03/2012 20:56

Thank you. I do mouth closed smiles too, and dream of smiling with my teeth on show. From your post though I do feel I'd need more work than you! Definitely seems an option though, and a more affordable one too. I think the first step I need to take is a consultation with a dentist, although I may need to be sedated just to get through the door. Thank you do much for taking the time to reply.

Oh no worries, and good luck to you. Do speak to a good cosmetic dentist about what they can do for you. There are lots of options for sedation too - I needed it!

I've got crowns, Best thing I did, they look amazing. I can't imagine implants looking better.

I love my smile now.

MummyAnnabella · 02/03/2012 21:08

Hello londonlass
I have one implant. V poor teeth. Again got some work done pre wedding. Was expensive and tbh result is okay but not as good as I hoped for the money. Think is option of last resort and you should def go see good dentist to discuss all options. For me I lost a tooth and was best option as I couldn't be doing with a plate of some sort. You may have other choices. Go see someon asap will not be as bad as you think.
