Help, please, are these dresses frumpy

These should fit me well (I'm tall and large) but I have a feeling they're frumpy - perhaps the flared skirts and/or just that the label, Artigiano, is hardly cutting edge!

Honest opinions, please - I'm more 'mature' than many of you but that doesn't mean I want to look 'mumsy'!

I like the first one; not as crazy about the print in the second one.

Where will you be wearing it to.

yes, I think the first one more possible too.

Not for any special occasion, just for when I want to wear a dress and look reasonably smart. This winter, I've had a great wool dress from Boden which, with interesting necklace and usually boots, has taken me to lots of occasions from lunch at smart London restaurants and clubs to informal parties and even a funeral. Would really lime a summer version of that, but not much luck with Boden this season.

I agree, the first one is ok but not the second one, although I'm not that keen on the length of the first one, I think where it stops is not great -maybe a little long which may look mumsyish.. If you jazzed it up a bit with accessories it wouldn't look so bad, maybe some knee boots too.
But that's just my opinion.Smile

countessbabycham · 02/03/2012 18:42

I think they're both frumpy.Sorry, but you did want honest.

Sneezeblossom · 02/03/2012 18:44

You could get something a lot nicer for that money.

Dollydowser · 02/03/2012 18:47

I looked at the second one and thought 'Kirsty Allsopp". I don't think she is frumpy, she has a certain classy look to her. I think length has a lot to do with things looking frumpy or not, skirts should end at your narrowest point. For me that is my knee, if they end on my chunky old calfs I look 2 stone heavier and very frumpy.

polyhymnia · 02/03/2012 18:53

The length is fixable - I like dresses to end just around knee, no lower (have good legs). So am willing to have either one taken up if necessary. But may still be frumpy!

The Artigiano website is currently boasting that Camilla shops there ...

piprabbit · 02/03/2012 18:58

I've been disappointed with the two items I bought from Artigiano - they seem to go for long arms and short bodies, plus the quality didn't match the price.

polyhymnia · 02/03/2012 18:58

Mmm yes, I did see that - as I said, I did already have my doubts ...

I think it's the length. If they were knee-length, they'd be more with-it.

AmberNectarine · 02/03/2012 19:03

I think it's hard not to look frumpy in a wrap dress unless you're pregnant. Polka dot better than swirly, and could well be improved by adjusting the length and accessorising hard.
