When do you consider yourself too old to wear something- and why?

Hardly a day goes by on this forum without someone asking "Am I too old to wear X,Y.Z."

Usually these posts make me laugh because the poster is a child- compared to me Smile

But it does worry me that so many MNs seem to think that 30 -FFS -is too "old" for some things. These days that's barely out of uni age.

I'm 56 and still wear all the things that younger women wear but with care- skinnies, ( but not painted on), Converse, leggings and tunics, jeans into boots etc etc. I do take care not to show the bits that aren't too good- like my upper arms which are a bit flabby- but overall all my friends are very fashionable in a "toned down" way that suits our age and we all take care of our weight etc and are a size 10-12.

Conversely ( get the pun?) I see much younger women sometimes wearing things they shouldn't which simply accentuate the bad bits of their bodies usually leggings when they have very fat legs, huge muffin tops, and so on.

I just wonder if YOU have a cut off age when you think you are too old for something- and why?

I read some 'rules' somewhere about skirt length. The only one I remember (probably because it's relevant to me) is that in your thirties your skirt is too short if it's shorter than the point on your leg where your fingers come to when you're standing with your arms hanging down normally. I have several dresses that started off considerably longer but through shrinkage may be dangerously close to breaking that rule! but I like my legs so I don't care

The teen DD wearing the same as you is a definite problem if you have a relatively conservative 14 year old.

Either I have to wear my fleece, boot cut jeans and mum boots everyday or accept that we will both be seen in animal hoodies, skinny jeans and brown leather long boots on the same day.

"Young girls dress to impress each other. Women dress to flatter themselves."

A truer word never spoken!

I look at my 13 year old god daughters and recently eliminated:

High waisted shorts
Playsuits
Harem pants
Scarves in hair
Absolutely everything made by Hollister, Pauls Boutque or JW

I have adopted

Converse
Skinnies
Big scarves
Biker jackets

But on a more expensive scale Wink

EnjoyResponsibly have you rejected those items because:

(a) you think they look ridiculous on the GDs and would look stupid on anyone, or

(b) you think they look good on the GDs but you don't have the figure -or whatever- for them, or

(c) you think they look good on the GDs and would probably look good on you but are somehow "too young".

(a) and (b) strike me as perfectly valid reasons for not wearing something; (c) does not.

EnjoyResponsibly · 01/03/2012 16:53

A and B

A for instance re harem pants, B regarding high waisted shorts

C is for the faint hearted, which I am not Grin

I don't think about any of this! I'm 21 and just wear skinnies, vest tops and boots at the moment. I don't want to get older and have clothes to worry about too! [Sad]

drywhiteplease · 01/03/2012 17:10

thesinglepringle I am a lot older than you and still dress fashionably.i am not shopist....I look everywhere and choose what suits me.dont worry about the age thing it's just a number.believe me it is great

TheSinglePringle · 01/03/2012 17:13

You are all a lot fashionable then me. I say wear what you want. But I agree playsuits are a no go for everyone no matter the age.

I wear skinnies and vest tops all the time so hoping as get older I will still get away with it Grin
