£1000 what would you buy???

My Granda recently died and he left £1000 each to my sister and I to buy ourselves something. There is a part of me that wants to keep it for a rainy day but my Grandparents were the type of people who would have wanted me to buy myself something nice.

My Grandma was uber glamourous.
She spent the majority of her central heating money on a fur coat 50 years ago..very irresponsible but she loved fashion.

We're not rich but I can afford the odd luxury now and again. This is just probably the only time I'll have that amount of money to spend guilt free. `

DP says I should buy myself something that I will keep and use over the years to remind me of them.

So, wise people of S&B..if it was you..what would you buy???

disclaimer
I might mention I'm not intending on spending all of it unless i'm bowled over by something I cannot live without.
I also realise that I am perhaps being selfish by not spending it on a holiday for us all but I have considered this, however I am 4m pg and ds2 is a homebody so a holiday would be a nightmare.
I also know I should probably spend it on baby guff but I'm fed up buying things for kids..for the past 5 years all I've done is buy functional stuff.

Thanks in advance!

I think you should treat yourself especially as you are pregnant. I wouldn't have a clue what to do with that amount of money.

I would spend 2/3 of it on a really luxurious one of the following:

  • Handbag
  • Watch
  • Overcoat
  • Smart dress for dinners and evenings out, but not ball gown that will only get worn once

And probably attempt to save the rest, but fail miserably Grin

Have you got any initial thoughts about what you'd like to splash out on?

I would buy a beautiful ring to wear on my right hand every day so I could think of them.

MrsCampbellBlack · 26/02/2012 17:21

I'd go for a piece of jewellery as find I get bored of handbags no matter how lovely they are.

If you bought antique - you could get some pretty nice diamond ear rings or a pendant for that.

AmethystMoon · 26/02/2012 17:23

A classic bag that'll last a life time or beautiful pair of classic earrings, diamond studs - not blingy!
What a fabulous opportunity, don't rush into this , enjoy Smile

Too right you should spend it on yourself!!!

I would buy a really great handbag...something that I could use every day for the next 10 years and it would still lok great - prob £150-250

I would also buy 3 pieces of jewellery, in my case earrings, of comperable value - maybe spend £60-100 per pair, that I could enjoy for the next couple of decades and then pass on as small heirlooms to the DCs....and boys can still get earrings as they will stay in the family...thir DP could wear them and then pass on to their first born for example. I would get more unusual gems - propably a Tanzanite pair, a Kunzite pair and a Tourmaline pair.

Then I would probably spend a couple of hundered on a night away for me and DC in a hotel, go for a meal, get a couples massage

And that still leaves a cople of hundred left over...Grin

I have far too much Yorkshire blood in me to buy any single item for anywhere near that much but I would be tempted to spend -

  • about a hundred pounds on a handbag
  • about the same on a silver cuff or necklace
  • about the same (or a bit more) on something for the house - in my case probably an 'antique' writing desk
  • something for the kitchen - eg some good pans or knives
  • the rest on a weekend away and things for the family
mrsmartin · 26/02/2012 17:26

ER...DP and me in a hotel...DC's can be looked after by someone else for a change!!

Clarabumps · 26/02/2012 17:46

I was thinking jewellery and handbags. I bought myself a very small diamond ring for my 30th and I love it. Even though it's teeny I love that it's real and sparkly. I was thinking a different stone though. Love earrings but have a tendency to lose one- no idea why but my left ear is somehow faulty. Plus I can't see them when they're on. Smile
Thanks I don't feel so guilty about spending the money now Grin

Another vote for jewellery. Something that will last forever and be a lovely reminder. And no it's not selfish to buy something for yourself! It's a lovely reminder of someone special.

madammecholet · 26/02/2012 19:18

I had exactly the same happen, I bought a diamond, 7 stone, eternity ring, every time I look down I think of my grandpa (who I adored) and it makes me smile. It'll be passed down to my daughter so I am really pleased with it and very attached to it. :)
