Don't you think that dress designers would realise that the popularity of the shrug means we want SLEEVES!?

Just reading the message about someone wanting an alternative to a shrug and I agree they do tend to look . Anyway I was wondering why they are so popular and then it dawned on me that actually what is needed is more dresses with sleeves. The strappy styles just don't look great unless your upper arms are fab and are a bit "exposed" to wear for work if you are say, a teacher or work in an office. I also find if you are generous of nork (as I am) then sleeveless styles are also difficult as if I buy a size big enough for my boobs the armholes gape and show off my bra. So what I need is nice trendy dresses but with actual sleeves. Dress designers please take note. Thank you.

"tend to look mumsy" that is meant to say.

Totally agree, shrugs look stupid anyway, bring back sleeves. And none of this 3/4 sleeves malarkey (which is clearly a ploy to save on fabric). I get chilly wrists.

HazleNutt · 26/02/2012 16:13

I just complained about the same thing here - even though my upper arms are fine, I totally agree that sleeveless dresses are just too exposed for the office. What's the point of buying a lovely dress if I have to cover it up with a jacket or cardi? We want sleeves!

moonshine · 26/02/2012 16:24

This makes me seethe regularly. I want to cover my arms but love to wear dresses. Yesterday I spent a fruitless day in central London trying to find a black tie dress with proper sleeves (after spending days on the Net doing the same). But designers, just because I want to cover my arms, it does not mean that I also want the dress to go right up to my neck and be a frumpy shape as my boobs are at least worth a little exposure or to cost ££££ as high-end designers do seem to recognise the value of a sleeve occasionally.

And I love three quarter length sleeves (in lace or semi-sheer is nice - thank you).

Unfortunately I have had to resort to a shrug but tis a nice at least and actually not very distracting.

moonshine · 26/02/2012 16:26

Actually I think we should have a 'dress with sleeves' thread, and I am not talking about pathetic cap sleeves that serve no purpose but to add width to your shoulders.

LemonDifficult · 26/02/2012 16:26

So agree.

omydarlin · 26/02/2012 18:32

I too am sick of this silly no sleeve policy the only dresses I ever seem to find are wrap dresses - which can make me look Mumsy or Wonky Norked. Trinny and Susannah were SO WRONG when they went on about wrap dresses suiting everyone! And what is with all the one shouldered or high necked Tunics as well. I don't mind 3/4 length though.

carrotsandcelery · 26/02/2012 18:41

I totally agree with this too. Not capped sleeves which still expose all the arm and gaping hole under the arm bra strap problem either. I have no issue with 3/4 sleeves though. I love them. They often look better than sleeves which stop just above the elbow.

LesserOfTwoWeevils · 26/02/2012 19:12

Dresses with sleeves and that don't stop at mid-thigh!

MrsCampbellBlack · 26/02/2012 19:12

Whistles have got a lot of dresses with sleeves - including a lovely navy lace one.

pictish · 26/02/2012 19:18

Yes yes YES! Bring back sleeves!!!

My upper arms are fucking terrible.

Nothing has sleeves!!!

Marenostrum · 26/02/2012 19:22

Totally agree, and not just about dresses, there needs to be more clothes with proper sleeves, and I also hate these capped one that seem to cut your arms at the fattest point- not flattering!

ggirl · 26/02/2012 19:29

and sleeves are so flattering , a hunk of cold flesh is not

KristinaM · 26/02/2012 19:31

this blogger runs regular features on dresses with sleeves

startail · 26/02/2012 19:40

My shoulders burn at the slightest hint of sun.
Please, please, please can we have the choice of short sleeves on cotton dresses and tops!

teenyweenytadpole · 26/02/2012 19:40

Love the Whistles ones but a bit £££ for me, sadly. I can just about stretch to Monsoon.

HazleNutt · 26/02/2012 19:41

Oh Lesser yes that too - I'm just 5'6 so not even tall, and so many dresses I order for work (talking about totally boring suitable for "business" office dresscode dresses) have to go back as they are only mid-thigh and therefore not fit for purpose.

MrsCampbellBlack · 26/02/2012 19:42

Grazia tend to run a 25% off whistles promotion a couple of times a year and their sales are good so worth keeping an eye out.
