Is hair pomade/ wax just vaseline with fragrance?

If so then would it be really eurgh to substitute the former for the latter? I don't usually use pomade or wax but I'm thinking of doing a certain style that may need it.

Its a different consistency with different ingredients, vaseline will be really heavy on your hair and will feel and look quite greasy. I wouldnt substitute tbh unless your going for a slicked back 30's style look.

Thanks for your reply Random. Wrong era. I'm actually going for the 40's classic set and they recommend a blob of hair wax/ pomade. I don't ever use it so I feel extravagant buying a pot and then using it just the once. Hmm, do you have any recommendations?

I wear my hair in a 40s set quite a lot and have never used wax or pomade. Partly because I want the style to last more than a day and if I sleep with that stuff on my hair the set will drop straight out. It is used to smooth any fluffiness really, once your hair is in style. You could just as easily spray some hairspray on a comb and smooth the crown that way. In fact a friend of mine, who is one of the most well known vintage hairstylists in the country, doesn't use wax or pomade on her sets either, so I wouldn't bother forking out if I were you!

Thanks Havingkittens, that's very useful to know! I did a practice run last night with rag curls and it looks great now that I've brushed it out. Just used hands and water to tame it in the end!
