I want to get my mum some hair oil for Mothers Day, as her hair is the bane of her life! She's got very dry, frizzy hair, which gets greasy roots. She's got it cut into a chin length bob, but it doesn't really look very nice unless I've straightened it for her (sorry mum Sad) but I'd love to give her a product that would really improve the appearance and condition, and hopefully show the natural curl. She's very "low-maintenance" btw, so there would be no point in getting anything that involves a lot of effort. Am I looking for a miracle, and if so, can anyone help??!! Thanks in advance!

Well, I have fine dry har and tonight I am trying coconut oil for the first time! Someone on another thread showed a jar for £6 from tescos, but I have found some for 9p from tesco in the worlod food aisle (checked the ingredients, both just 100% coconut oil). Am leaving in for a while then washing out, good reports from other m'neter sabout it's long term nourshemnt of har so iff you can wait a few days I'll update you about how it's going Smile

JoyceDivision · 24/02/2012 20:18

sorry, 99p not 9p Blush

still bloomin cheap though!

Housewifefromheaven · 24/02/2012 20:21

I use kerastase elixir ultime. It's not cheap but it is brilliant.

TwoNoisyBoys · 24/02/2012 20:59

Thanks both of you, joyce wow, for 9p I was going to buy her two Grin lol! Do you use it as a leave-in-overnight-wash-out conditioning treatment, or do you just leave it in? And thanks housewife, where do you buy that from? I'll investigate both of those as possibilities, thank you.

The thread i saw said they put it in at night before washing hair next day, not a leave it on for good sort of thing, so I have warmed botle under hot tap to warm and melt oil, rubbed it in my hair and am washing it out in morning. In a few days I'll report back and let you know hw it's performomg.

I swim too so it will be interesting to see how it balances out teh chlorine damage...

TwoNoisyBoys · 24/02/2012 21:06

Ooh, yes please, look forward to hearing about it! Just out of interest, are you wrapping it in a turban or anything, or just using an old pillowcase?

I get it from the hairdressers but you can buy it online. It has made a massive difference to my hair, and it is my best beauty buy. Plus it looks posh in the bathroom. Bonus!!

JoyceDivision · 24/02/2012 22:37

Er, had a turban on while it sort of 'set' or dried up a bit, but it will be no turban or anything when I sleep, just muckying up apillowcase i sleep on!

I recently bought some "mythic oil" I think it's by L'oreal, from the hairdressers. My hair was really damaged from having it lightened and was seriously frizzy and broken - this has really worked wonders on the condition - it was instantly shiny and more swishy.
I've never used any other hair oils so cant compare but it was about £15 so not all that expensive and certainly works!
Although might be checking out the 99p coconut oil now I know about it....

mrsmartin · 24/02/2012 23:07

I use mythic oil on my hair every day...it is really good at seperating the layers in my hair, smells gorgeous and lasts ages...I would be chuffed if someone gave me it as a present. I still use leave in hair treatments once a week etc but the oil is both my blow dry and finishing product - love it Grin. It is also a leighter weight than morrocan oil so easier to use.

mrsmartin · 24/02/2012 23:08

lighter...gosh my typing makes me look so dumb Hmm

AlfalfaMum · 24/02/2012 23:11

I'm also a fan of Kerastase elixir ultime. I bought it from www.lookfantastic.com where it's a little cheaper; also look out for money-off codes etc.

ednurse · 24/02/2012 23:13

I use Boots Organix Argan oil. It's lovely and I think £8 a bottle, though the range was on 2 for £8 recently! Grin

LesserOfTwoWeevils · 25/02/2012 00:23

Using a shampoo with no sulphates and leaving in conditioner at the end will work wonders.
Or the full Curly Girl method.

TwoNoisyBoys · 25/02/2012 09:47

Loads to go on now, thank you! Chunkamatic and mrsmartin I was interested in the mythic oil as I'd seen it on a different thread......is it suitable for all hair types? My hair is long layers (think MN cut Grin), highlighted with a tendency to greasiness - would it do anything for me? LesserofTwoWeevils I'll give that to mum to see if she fancies trying it, thanks very much for your help Smile

Also, can anyone recommend a good shampoo with no sulphates please? Thanks!

LesserOfTwoWeevils · 25/02/2012 12:58

L'Oreal does no-sulphate ranges called EverSleek and EverPure which are good.
I've seen Boots' Naked range recommended on here (I'm not in UK so can't try it).
There are quite a few cheap & widely available ones if you look. The bottles will have the ingredients on the back?if they have sulphates, eg sodium lauryl sulphate, they will be very near the top of the list.

mrsmartin · 25/02/2012 13:10

twonoisyboys My hair is long and gets greasy by the second day and I have found it impossible to overload my hair with it. It has a pumb dispenser which makes life easier...The key is in the application. Take one pump and rub it into your palms and fingers abit like how you would rub in handcream. Then just run your hands through your mid lengths and ends (avoid your roots. That's it really - you will see an immediate difference).

valiumredhead · 25/02/2012 13:17

L'Oreal Mythic Oil is very nice.

FunnysInTheGarden · 25/02/2012 13:23

Moroccan Oil is lovely and great for making curly hair look good. Fairly pricey though. I paid £25

JoyceDivision · 25/02/2012 19:16

Coconut oil update!

I use dthis last night, and can report as follows for anyone interested!

Firstly, had mild panic in shower when shampoo didn't seem to be removing it, hair still felt acked up with oil, however the shampoo and conditioner (just std ones) did remove it... My hair is in a lot better condition after just one use, there is a very very slight err, if not thickness then it doesn't look as fne, and it looks glossier, the way I can really tell is that I go swimming and the ens of my hair are very dry, almost crispy, but this morning they are actually soft and normal healthy looking! Am planning to do this a couple of times a week. And it didn't spoin the pillow either Grin

JoyceDivision · 25/02/2012 19:17

And mine was a 99p botte from the world fod aisle in tescos!

and Boots Naked range shampoos and conditioners is BOGOF at moment!

talkingnonsense · 25/02/2012 20:05

Has anyone compared te kerastase elixir with the mythic oil? I am using the organix morrocan oil at the moment and it's quite good.

Scarlettno1 · 27/02/2012 11:41

WOW is what I can say about Amargan oil which isn't cheap but is the best!! I have tried lots of hair products over the years and nothing compares, the smell is fab, my hair is curly and fine and when using the oil (which isn't greasy) it increases the volume and becomes curly not frizzy, you only need a few pumps so it lasts long. When I straighten my hair with my hair straighteners i use Amargan shine & protect which has thermal protection, I bought mine on the net on a buy-1 get 1 free can't get better than that, one for you and one for your mum lol :)
