My GHDs are on their last legs, so what can I replace them with?

I love my GHDs, they make my messy wavy hair nice and neat, but now they are dying and I can't justify spending £100 on a new pair. So what should I get instead? My hair is shoulder-length, very thick and layered. I use the GHDs when I wash it and on days in between to tidy it up, I can't be bothered to straighten it all properly, so I'm not hung up on having straight hair.

I need something that will make my hair neat and tidy, can cope with thick hair and doesn't cost a fortune.

Over to you!

A while ago there was a similar thread and BaByliss Pro 230 straighteners were recommended by someone as a good alternative to GHDs. I bought some and was very pleased with them; they're excellent on my long, frizzy hair.

Argos always seems to have them for half price - £39.99 instead of £79.99.

What kind of dying? I had mine repaired by a GHD repair company I found online - can't remember which one. Much cheaper. Mine were sparking at the point where the cable joined the straighteners so maybe your flavour of death wouldnt' be that simple Grin

Mine are ten years old now.

DukesOfTripHazard · 24/02/2012 10:37

Mind you I don't use them that often...

Thanks Roxy that sounds much better than GHD price!

Dukes I think mine have the same ailment! They don't come in when I plug them in and I have to jiggle the wire a bit to get the current flowing.

Mine are probably 6 or 7 years old.

I bought Nicky Clarke 'Desired' straighteners and they are so good. My GHD ones broke after less than a year and I got sent a new pair but I use the Nicky Clarke ones instead as they are so much better.

DukesOfTripHazard · 24/02/2012 12:00

If you like them, I'd consider the repair.

Another recommendation for the babyliss pro 230 here. I have long, thick wavy hair and they're great for straightening and curling.

Scarlettno1 · 27/02/2012 11:46

I would never by ghd again my daughter had hers for 3 years and they stopped working on contacting customer service they asked to see the straightners and said they had been overused, I said whatmdo u mean they said like in a salon! What rubbish! they couldn't repair them as they didnt have the parts. I have replaced them with iced diamonds they r just as good half the price £49.99

BendyBob · 27/02/2012 11:55

Why are GHD's so expensive anyway?Confused I have a pair and they're great it's true, as in they do the job, but how can they justify the price?

I bought mine ages ago and only use them now and again. When I bought them it was the type of plates (ceramic?) that made them better than others at the time, but I can't believe other straighteners aren't just as good nowadays.
