Obscure make-up brands that you love...

Following on from the Mascara thread, which I didn't want to hijack, I thought I would start a thread to see if you have any make-up faves that aren't from mainstream cosmetics houses.

I love most of the Mally cosmetics (though there are some doozies in the range) and it has some definate stars:

The Mascara - I love, love, love the volumising mascara - it gives jet black, thick, glossy false-looking lashes. I have also tried the waterproof version which is good but has less impact ime. A new one was launched yesterday called 'ginormous' which seems to give longer lashes but not the thickness - I will get some when my mascara stockpile is lower...

Cancellation Concealer System - This is the best under-eye concealer I have ever found, it has complete coverage yet you need hardly any. The one in the palette is the one to get as the sick version isn't as easy to blend. Not particularly good for covering blemishes but for dark circles or pigmentation it is excellent. Avoid the creamy concealer in the tube - it is rubbish. (That's for you moo Grin

Evercolour Eyeliners - These are the pencil eyeliners that you sharpen and they are great - super soft, highly pigmented and easily blended, yet once they have been left to set they stay put all day, even in the waterline. The automatic eyeliners are good for lining on the upper and lower lashes but not great in the waterline or used as an eyeshadow; the lasting liquid liner has great staying power but I still prefer wet eyeshadow and an eyeliner brush for getting a sharp line.

I also love the primers, the visible skin foundation, the face defender clear powder, face defender blush and the liquid lipsticks. However, steer clear of the Poreless perfection finishing powder - it is awful - made my skin look really chalky.

So...any gems that you guys have found that we won't come across in boots or House of Fraser?

Not sure if its obscure but I always wear ultra glow bronze power. I order it online now as I can't find anywhere that stocks it.

MrsM, that mascara looks good, not sure about the concealer though, I don't like powder over it but guess I could always try a refill and that way get the concealer only? how does it compare to Bobbi Brown or RMS?

MooMinCow · 23/02/2012 20:48

Hi mrsM!

Thanks for the lowdown on Mally concealer... Have been umming about it for ages. Currently use bobbi brown corrector and creamy concealer, but always on a quest for a full coverage, long lasting, non drying, non line settling one (demanding moi?)what colour do you reckon? Asian skin tone, but little lighter than that Asian model always wheeled out on QVC shows IYKWIM! Can't decide between Tan or Rich.

Have you ever tried the Laura Geller range?

Anyway, I'm a fan of the Mally mascara too - 'tis wondrous!

Other fave is Sleek makeup from Superdrug. Their eyeshadows are amazing (just as good if not better than MAC), as are their blushers and contouring kit. Lipsticks a bit meh (more to do with the texture than colour).

MooMinCow · 23/02/2012 20:58

Ooooh forgot. Aldi (Lacura) nail polish. The most hardwearing polish I've used! Limited colour range, but fantastic quality for £2 (I think)

ihatethecold · 23/02/2012 21:01

And where does one buy this mythical Mally ?Grin

mrsmartin · 23/02/2012 21:03

To answer both of your questions re the concealer... I find it is stronger coverage than the bobbi brown one. I apply with my ring finger and just tap my finger in the palette and then press it into my skin. I start at the orbital bone and 'smooch' it up to my lower lash line and that way I don't put too much product on. I have a natural excess of skin under my eyes and so have a crease that the concealer collects in - I swipe over it with a cotton bud and it doesn't collect there all day.

miss foodie I know what you mean about powder around the eyes but you use the smallest amount so it doesn't dry the eye area out. That said I often wear it without the powder and just use the powder on my eyelids to brighten them when I do flicky eyeliner. I think to get the refills you have to order from the US

For colour - her colours are quite warm so I would say try the tan.

I have tried Laura geller...the spackle is ok, the balance and brighten isn't a patch on Bare Minerals. The marble lipsticks are great - I'm much more of a lippy girl and they are lovely - really balmy without being sticky. She als makes the most gorgeous highlighter - vanilla something or other. Everything else is just ok.

Good tip re the sleek eyeshadows being like mac Grin

QVC. They have 30 day money back guarantee so you can use it for almost a month and send it back for a full refund (minus p&p). Love it - can't do that in Boots or Superdrug Wink

MissFoodie · 23/02/2012 21:06

mrs m, am looking at the 2 kits on qvc (Mally), one is 6 piece and one is 7, but the 6 is more expensive??? and seems to have the same items???

v tempted I have to say.... :)

MissFoodie · 23/02/2012 21:09

uggggh both are on waitlist on qvc............is this the only retailer in the UK?

MooMinCow · 23/02/2012 21:10

Ooh mrsM, I could wax lyrical about Sleek eyeshadow palettes £7 for 12 top quality shades! I have the Original, Storm, Au Naturel and primer one. Team with Urban Decay primer potion for total 'bullet proof' eyes Wink

mrsmartin · 23/02/2012 21:17

miss foodie do you need the tan concealer? They are both only currently available in tan...

Mally does have a tsv due at the start of April...Wink The mally's look collections are pretty good (mascara, eyeshadow, blush, eyeliner and lipgloss) but if it is the concealer you want (and not in tan) then I would maybe hang on to see what is in the tsv. And the blusher in the tube (in both of the kits that have concealer) is crap.

mrsmartin · 23/02/2012 21:18

miss foodie - yep - totally exclusive in the uk...there's always ebay?

OP posts:
mrsmartin · 23/02/2012 21:19

I'm not a massive eyeshadow person - I prefer to wet them down and use as eyeliner...

MissFoodie · 23/02/2012 21:25

the 7 piece kit has the concealer, lip gloss and mascara, is that blusher in tube not good then?
I need the lightest concealer

mrsmartin · 23/02/2012 21:40

no it is awful - starts out purple and then changes colour as you rub it in - really hard to get the amount and colour right. I use the 2 lightest colours and the fair is a proper porcelain. I would maybe hold out until April...

You could email mally beauty and see if they are able to sell you a refil though? I've heard the customer service is really good...

OP posts:
MissFoodie · 23/02/2012 22:48

hhmmm ok just thinking that for 48 quid its better value than the mascara and concealer separately -
when you say the 2 lightest colours, do you mean the concealer? do you mix them together then? just concerned the 2nd one would be too yellow on me...

mrsmartin · 23/02/2012 23:04

yes I use the light and the medium (the lighter one closer to the lash line) but that is only because I pretty much craft my face out of make up - my face is all stripes of highlighter, concealer etc until I blend Grin. All of the colours apart from the tan are on waitlist anyway though...

The medium is a proper medium - you definately want light if you are a typical porcelain complexion.

Hate to bear bad news Sad
