If you don't take your make up off at night is it best to still moisturise?

Ok I know I should take off my make up every night and often I do but sometimes I'm too tired/can't be bothered/have other things to do Wink. If I'm going to go to bed with make up on would my skin still benefit from a slap of moisturiser or is this a big no. While we're at it is it better to have a quick swipe with a cleansing wipe or not at all?

If you are not removing makeup from your face before putting on cream, then I wouldn't bother. Even if you aren't wearing makeup, you should still cleanse your face before applying cream to remove grease as well as dirt build up.

I think it would just further clog your pores and cause build up.

your skin is most active between 11pm and 4am so if you aren't cleansing and treating your skin at night you are missing a massive opportunity. I'm no saint and have gone to bed with my make up on many a time (usually due to night time naughties Wink. A face wipe is better than nothing but still isn't good. My advice is to take your make up off at the earliest opportunity (ie when you get in from work) and then apply your cream when you brush your teeth at night (still not the optimum routine but much better than what you're up to).

Nah, I don't..

AprilSkies · 21/02/2012 21:55

Big no, cleanse first

Valpollicella · 21/02/2012 21:57

surely adding a layer of moisturiser just selas in all the grime and makeup?

PeanutButterChocolate · 21/02/2012 22:02

Ohhhhhhh....please don't sleep with makeup on OP! You must, must, must take it off before going to bed!

cluffyfunt · 21/02/2012 22:05

So what is the right night time skin care routine?
< clueless >

LDNmummy · 21/02/2012 22:06

Oh and IRT the cleansing wipes, I used to use them as they are easier (also guilty of going to bed with my makeup on Grin) but found they left a residue and my skin was too sensitive to use them.

But overall, I would say they are not a bad compromise.

keepmoving · 21/02/2012 22:09

Cleansing wipes for emergencies or a cleansing water that you can use with collton wool to wipe off make-up then moisturise. This isn't the best option as you are better following with a good wash off cleanser to get your skin truely clean but it's ok for every now and then.

NotMostPeople · 21/02/2012 22:10

Well you've all said what I'd been thinking all these year sit just occurred to me last night that perhaps I ought to put moisturiser on. Most nights I do cleanse properly but sometime my dh gives me the eye and it all goes out the window.

Pharoahnuff · 21/02/2012 22:37

Ew scuzzer. You have time to watch tv. Take maje up off.

Pharoahnuff · 21/02/2012 22:38

How the fuck is skin active ? What does that mean? How does skin know its nightine

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 21/02/2012 22:50

I take mine off and do my skincare routine (and sometimes get into my PJs too) after I have put the DCs to bed, then it doesn't need doing later.

mrsmartin · 21/02/2012 22:54

pharoah - it's more that it knows when you are asleep but as an average that was when people are most likely to be asleep. The skin uses the time that you are asleep to regenerate - it produces far more new cells when you are asleep than when you are awake. That's how it's effing active....

bonzo77 · 21/02/2012 23:02

in an "emergency" I use the wipes. but they are too harsh for my eyes, so in those "emergencies" i leave eye makeup on, remove the rest with a wipe and moisturise cheeks only. Deal with it properly in the morning if my pillow hasn't cleaned it all up for me over night Blush

NotMostPeople · 22/02/2012 00:13

I don't want to spend every evening with my dh without make up on. Obviously I'm often without make up in his company but if I took my make up off when the dcs go to bed then I'd be au natural all the time we are together except weekends. He wouldn't care but I would. So on nights he's at home (he's works away 3 - 4 nights) I tend to take off make up when we go to bed. At the same time as teeth etc. I suppose there are probably two to three nights a week I don't remove make up.

I wouldn't admit this in rl Blush.

I'm willing to bet your dh would be happy to see you with your make up flamed off...
Go on, give it a try and see how/ if he reacts!

But in the grand scheme of things, prioritising sex before make-up removal is a no-brainer :)

BloooCowWonders · 22/02/2012 05:44

'flamed' ?! Sorry for auto correct

NotMostPeople · 22/02/2012 08:17

Flamed off BloooCow, I don't wear that much Grin. Honestly DH wouldn't give a monkeys, it's me who does.

I don't think there's much point just moisturising your cheeks.
When your skin starts to age it will do it around your eyes first.

Then you will be glad you cleansed and moisturised!

polyhymnia · 22/02/2012 10:30

Definitely pointless to put moisturiser on skin that isn't clean.

If you've got time to put moisturiser on - at whatever point in the evening - you've probably got time for a quick cleanse which really is essential if you want to keep skin in good nick. But all these things are down to personal choice in the end.
