Excellent article in Guardian on moisturisers - links to scientific article on what works (not much) and doesnt (most stuff)!

Great article in Guardian today
www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2012/feb/12/should-i-use-moisturiser

But even better is the article it links to at the end - research papers. Gives a scientific outline of what works and what doesnt. Very interesting.

Really interesting thread. Miss Macross are you looking for a top up sunscreen with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide? if so have you seen:

Loving this thread now!

Anita Roddick (founder of the body shop for those too young to remember!) said there is no magic bullet - expensive creams have more oil, cheap ones have more water. She said for good skin don't smoke and always use a sunscreen and thats it. And this from someone who made her fortune from selling these creams!

Ben Goldacre's book Bad Science is a fabulous read.

I don't understand the "Always use sunscreen" advice. Unless you live in a sunny country, spend most of your day outside...why wear it?

lurkingaround · 22/02/2012 17:27

Always use sunscreen, yes. Even in this pretty sunless part of the world. You'd be surprised the amount of damage the sun does, even here. Using sunscreen has been shown to prevent skin damage. But do take vitamin D supplement. I can understand why you question it, it does go against the grain, wearing sunscreen in the dark winter, but the fact is, it works.

Of course advertising works! Why else would companies spend millions on promoting crap? Because it works! Why did i buy Nanoblur? And I'm not one to be parted with my money to castles-in-the-air cosmetic companies. None of us are immune to its charms! otchy on a previous page and missmac put the success of advertising very succinctly.

"It also drives me nuts on ads when it presents figures like, "82% of respondents felt their skin looked better" or some such blah, as tho it were scientific fact and counted as a trial. What a load."

It's consumer perception data, not intended to be a medical trial. The only way you can really judge if skin looks better is opinion - if it was claiming things like firmness or line reduction that's a whole different claim and one that needs supporting with clinical data, double-blind trials etc.

The people in white coats DO do proper trials, but there's no test for whether someone thinks a cream makes them look a bit better or not.

mippy · 22/02/2012 17:43

*a substitute for a trial

lurkingaround · 22/02/2012 18:05

Yes mippy but it's presented as fact and as a 'scientific' fact. It is misleading. And while these kind of statements may pass the advertising codes, it is spin.

QuinnFabray · 22/02/2012 18:14

I use the Peter Roth Mineral powder on top of my make up for tops ups through out the day ( only in the summer, mind ). Yes, it's great. I recommend it.

mippy · 23/02/2012 11:58

lurkingaround - No, it isn't. The rules are a lot stricter than you realise, even if they are designed to leave a lot to interpretation.

mrsmartin · 23/02/2012 14:18

mippy - I wouldn't bother...the ladies aren't for turning...

Helltotheno · 23/02/2012 21:59

So... are doctors willing to give out presciptions for Retinols then, just like that?
And where can one get glycolic acid?

MerryMarigold · 23/02/2012 22:15

I was wondering the same Helltotheno. Do I just go to the doc and say, "Can I have some Retinol cream please?" £7.90 prescription charge (I think it is) is still a bargain when it comes to expensive face creams. I have terrible acne scarring, so maybe I have a case....hmmmm

lurkingaround · 25/02/2012 14:38

I think your GP will prescribe it, if you ask (and pay for it). I don't live in uk, can't rem how much I paid, maybe £15. You may have to pay for the cream, not just the prescription charge. My dermatologist here tells me she uses it every night. She looks fantastic. I have found it v hard to get used to, alot of peeling and redness initially. I'd say it took me a month, maybe more, to acclimatise to it. Use at night only, and be hypervigilant about sunscreen. I used to 'dilute' it down with my moisturising cream and use it once or twice a week, and then gradually upped the frequency of use, if you follow me. You need to use it for 12 to 18 months before you see an improvement. But it is a proven treatment. For reversing and preventing ageing.

Merry, you may have a case, Retin A is a good acne treatment.

As far as I see it, glycolic acid is a peeler. and thus a resurfacer. It comes in varying strengths. I think in cleansers it's about 12%. You can get facials up to, I dunno, 40%. The ones on telly, under general anaesthetic, are 70% I think, but don't quote me on that. I also think it helps stimulate collagen growth, by the fact that it is an irritant. Mrsmartin prob knows more.

feelinghappynow · 25/02/2012 14:45

I wouldnt say an excellent article - the Dr advices Aqueous cream - which has been slated for a while now. It has been prescribed for people with excema etc but found to make the condition worse... see here...www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-11564662 so i'd not want to be slapping that on my face,

Best option is an organic oil, like coconut or almond etc....

Re Peter Roth powder, where do you buy it? Can you get it in the big department stores?
