(Step)Mother of the Groom - can I get away with this dress?

I'm only 38 but feel ancient as my stepson is getting married this summer.

Could I get away with this dress or is it too prom/bridesmaid-y?

I'm also going to a 50s themed wedding so it would do for both...

QuietOhSoQuiet · 18/02/2012 19:13

ffs step mother of the groom Confused

countessbabycham · 18/02/2012 19:16

Sorry, but I think it is too bridesmaidey.

madammecholet · 18/02/2012 19:17

LOVE it...

Team with teal heels and clutch - don't try and match!

TheMonster · 18/02/2012 19:17

too flouncy.

eandz · 18/02/2012 19:22

I love it! if you've got the body, wear it!

HettyKett · 18/02/2012 19:22

I love it too. Fab. Keep the rest of you simple and groomed. Stunning.

Which colours were you thinking of?

GenericTalkName · 18/02/2012 19:23

Dammit, I thought it might be a bit much but I do so love it.

If not for SM of the Groom, could I wear it as a guest to a 50s themed wedding or would I just look like a wannabe bridesmaid? That means I would have to buy two new dresses :o

(PS it comes in all different colours, was actually thinking of teal Madammecholet).

Advice, including dissenting voices much appreciated as I have track record of fashion disasters...

Is that your usual style? If so then I think its fine.

But if its a bit of a departure then I'd be wary but depends how well you get on with your SS, his mother and the bride's mother . . . Could you show it to the bride and get her reaction perhaps?

If its going to be a tricksy situation then I'd personally go for a 'safer' option.

GenericTalkName · 18/02/2012 19:24

x post HettyKet - Teal or blue - I try to avoid pastels...

Never met SS's mother although there is no antagonism. She has a distinctive style apparently and is going for an ethnic / fringed / multicoloured outfit.

Bride's mother - no idea but suspect it will be quite traditional / safe

Bride gave it the thumbs up but need to ensure she is not just being nice to me!

I think asking the bride would be a nice touch then you're not worrying just before the day. I think as others had said the key is in the colour and a darker colour like the teal would flip it over into acceptable.

But I'd check to be sure though.

Fabulous dress by the way. Very envious!

HettyKett · 18/02/2012 19:32

It won't look bridesmaidy at all in a darker colour. Teal would be great. I like the look of the Aubergine, Truffle, Navy and Grey too. Shame you can only order 3 swatches.

Go for it!

DoodleAlley · 18/02/2012 19:32

Sorry x post. Given bride has already given her blessing I'd go ahead and you'll look fabulous!

Have a great day

GenericTalkName · 18/02/2012 19:43

Excellent - thanks everyone, much appreciated.

Am going to order colour swatches - teal, emerald green and aubergine.
