Maternity wear for 28 year old!?

Hey everyone, I'm about 11 weeks gone (not had dating scan yet) and none of my dresses fit already [wail!]. My boobs have gone up 2 cup sizes and I have a bit of a bump, esp at night. I'm a size 12, but all my weight is boobs and bum and my tummy is usually v flat.

It's my friends 28th tonight and I haven't told anyone yet. I have zero to wear that will fit as I discovered last night. The clothes I normally are normally tight dresses with v, scoop or deep neckline.

I also don't want to look fat so going up a dress size in my usual clothes wont really work I don't think, and be a waste of money perhaps.

Does anyone have any ideas what I can do? I've looked in Topshop and everything in their range is quite smart/casual, not really "night out with the girls".

This might be a moot point as I may not be able to go if I don't stop being sick. Hoping these tablets work!

I find cleavage always a sufficient distraction (and I'm 20 years older than you). Get a top that focuses attention on your 2-cup increase and nobody'll be checking out anything else Wink

haha sounds like a good plan! Should I just buy normal clothes do you think?

Sounds like you're going to be shopping today so try both and see what looks right. :-)

H&M do maternity stuff too, some less mumsy than others.

Topshop have some maternity pleather leggings and New Look have a black chiffon type blouse with a round neck that ties at the bottom (£19.99) - it is not low necked but it's very sheer so you could wear a low cut vest underneath. The way the top does up and the shine on the pleathers distracts attention. I wore v similar at the same stage as you and no one noticed. Alternatively Dorothy Perkins has a whole range of dresses with scoop necks and ruching at the waist. They're quite cheap and should do the job. I wore the leopard print & the pattern diverted attention. It will be much easier in a few weeks when you can tell the world and show your bump off Smile.

In general scarves and open jackets are your friends. The alternative is to wear a fitted dress with a bright jacket (the orange H&M one looks a lot more luxe than it is) undone over the top.

I think H and M are a good bet too. I wouldn't necessarily bother with maternity wear though, a lot of their stuff in a size up has fitted me fine throughout (am 36 weeks now) and is flattering. I'd go for a loose tunic dress with a v neck, opaque tights and heels if you can manage them.

brilliant, thanks for the suggestions everyone..

monkeysmama not sure I can pull off Pleather leggings, my thighs are my downfall, will give it a whirl. I don't think a jacket would help, I'm always too hot!

fuckityfuckfuckfuck can't believe your innormal clothes @ 36wks, I'm very jealous!

What do we think about fat pants? Will I be horribly uncomfortable in them? Will they crush my "fun size mars bar" baby and "cantaloupe" uterus?!

Oh no, I still have my trusty kangaroo pouch jeans, I just find a lot of stuff out in shops now is actually cut in a way that looks good with a bump. Maternity clothes cost about double what their normal equivalants do Hmm so I've been making do. I do think a lot of drapey stuff actually looks better with a bump.

monkeysmama · 18/02/2012 11:17

Do you mean Spanx style pants?

shouldIbecrossaboutthis · 18/02/2012 11:20

I just have real problem with my boobs (34 F), floaty tops usually just make me look massive, if I had skinnier legs I could probably pull off floaty stuff. I just feel much better in tighter stuff. Or I dud before I got pregnant!

It will be nice to get past that "gosh she's been eating lots of pies" stage and into the "Awww she's pregnant stage"; then I wont have to worry so much Grin.

What did you wear? I wouldn't recommend shape wear during pregnancy though Spanx do make a maternity range. I have the same size chest as you but slim legs and bum so tight trousers and a looser top are better on me. Cos was my saviour when I was trying to conceal my bump - the loose fit was perfect.

shouldIbecrossaboutthis · 19/02/2012 21:05

I found this dress lurking at the back of my wardrobe, it's always been a little big (I'm a 10/small12) as lipsy comes up big on me, so managed to wear that and the frills and band hid the small bump!

I was home and in bed by 12 though! But at least I don't feel sick anymore Grin

Thanks for the advice everyone.

Skinny maternity jeans from GAP. They have an inch or 2 thick elasticated waistband and can be worn until you are around 7 months. I lived in mine and then you can buy any long line top / tunic / funky tee from H&M, TopShop etc. etc.
Maternity ranges that weren't too frumpy - H&M, GAP, Debenhams and M&S (online had a bigger range than instore).
