Heated rollers or curling tongs to create big, loose curls?

Which are best? And which make should I buy? My hair holds a curl quite easily, but I've never used tongs (if they're even called 'tongs' nowadays...). Heated rollers seem a faff, but are the results better?

I've tried the curling-with-straighteners trick but I don't like the unnatural-looking type of curl they give. And I do the sock bun trick but the results aren't consistent.

I'm looking for this kind of effect.

I have the remington pearl curling wand and can do that look in 10 mins tops. It was about £25 from boots and the curls last - it is the only thing that has ever got a curl to stay in my hair (and even better-I don't need hairspray and the curls last till I wash them out).

My best ever hair tool (also - no 'crimp' mark like you get with tongs or straighteners and lots more control than you get with heated rollers.

That sounds good mrsmartin, will look into it - no crimp mark sounds ideal.

It gets great reviews on Amazon and is only £20 there - bargain! Will be getting it unless someone else comes on here with a better idea. Thank you!

Second using a tong/ wand. I put sort curls in the end of my hair with a set of tongs, similar to your picture but my hair's shorter, it takes me a few minutes and looks really good. I like the idea of a wand but I use a portable set so can walk around while I'm doing it!

flipflopflap · 15/02/2012 13:20

*soft not sort

Thanks flipflop, that's what I want to do too - put curls in the ends, and shake them out so they're loose and wavy.

I went to a new hairdresser recently and asked him to give me loose curls after my cut - but he said it was 'mumsy' and proceeded to use a diffuser on my wet hair until it was a frizzy mess! He was the owner of the salon and a dick in many other ways too, including asking what I earned and telling me what various members of his family earned Hmm

Shock at rude hairdresser. I hope you didn't tip him. Git.

I have these heated rollers and would highly recommend as I don't get on with tongs

Really good, I blow dry then BBH to smooth out then pop these in (take about 2 mins to put in) then do make up/get dressed and by the time I've done they can come out and leave the curls to cool.

Oh my word - I would have told him to do as I asked or I wasn't paying!! I once had a hairdresser try to convince me I should dye my hair red because cheryl cole had done it!!! Ridiculous.

I still find the curling wand easier to use but maybe it has to do with hair length? Mine is very long...
I tried rollers (the diceasere style builders) but I needed to use a product on my hair (which I hate doing - oil yes but sprays?yuk) and the curls didn't last on me.

No I did not tip him. But I've found a lovely hairdresser now who always deserves a tip :)

I think I'm going to start with the curling wand, then try curlers if I'm not happy with the wand. My hair is long too and I think the wand would be easier for just making the bottom lengths wavy. I may be wrong though! Thanks for your recommendation Constance.
