Boys with long hair - 1st haircut - what to do with boys hair - long or short????

My son is will be 2 in May, he has never had a haircut, so at the moment it is to his shoulders and is naturally layered. I personally don't like buzz cuts but i don't want him to look scruffy or girly. Do any of you have any ideas for him, he has blond slightly wavy hair, should i get him a fringe or get him a big boy cut? Please help, i have never had brothers and all my kids cousins are girls, this is new to me - what do you do with their hair. DD is nearly 4 and she has long hair parted to the side and it is reaches where the imaginary bra strap would sit.

Please i need some ideas:

DS 14 months had his first big boy cut with clippers at the weekend - no 6 all over, just short and tidy not a buzz cut or anythingWink

Oh and it was already long enough to put in a ponytail alreadyGrin

Kind of having similar dilemma - DS's hair below shoulders, everyone thinks he is a girl (even dressed as spiderman with an 'Birthday BOY' badge on!), but he really doesn't want it cut and gets v upset if I suggest it. Lots of the men we know have very long hair, DH shoulder length, so understandably he wants to be like them BUT not sure what will do when he starts school as he doesn't like having it tied back either.

The only possibility he hasn't reacted badly to so far is suggesting we have his hair done like Thor:

Not sure how it will work on a child with no designer stubble though!

Anyway, sorry for me me meeeee. From your point of view any long haired boys I've seen with fringes tend to look more girly than without fringe.

If getting it cut shorter isn't a problem how about something like this:

I like the last one - has this style got a particular name - love the boden boys hair at the top of this page -- www.boden.co.uk/en-GB/Boys-Tops-T-shirts.html#nav. and this one www.boden.co.uk/en-GB/Boys-Shorts.html.

What are these styles called - how do you convey it to a hairdresser - really don't want him ending up with a mullet.

Just take the pic with you on your phone, or print it out.

Where are you based? It might be worth for the first cut going to a specialist children's salon? It is much more expensive but you might find it worthwhile to get a cut you are both happy with and then you can go somewhere local afterwards for regular trims which will work out cheaper. Tantrum in London is very good and a lovely experience for a first hair cut. DS(3) hair is straight on the top and at the front and curls naturally around the sides and at the back so he can get away with quite a shaggy cut without it looking messy or too girly. Will probably get it cut a bit more short when he starts school though.

I would also recommend a children's salon. They aren't necessarily more expensive. We assumed the one in our town would be but it's the same price as the barber's. In fact, the barber gave up with DS after two minutes because he was making a fuss and still charged the full £10 even though he had another customer ready to take his place, so not like he'd wasted an appointment on DS.

Thank you for the advice on children's salons. I looked at the Tantrum site and looked like the perfect place for DS, being able to sit in a car may actually keep him still. I have booked an appointment for him next week so hopefully he will end up looking like a big boy rather than a scruffy muchkin.

Hope it goes well - they have Peppa Pig on loop as well so hopefully it will all go well!

PS.Don't tell him that after his haircut he'll be able choose a lolly from the treasure chest Grin!

He loves peppa pig, so hopefully he will have a great time. Booked an appointment for DD to have a trim at the same time as DS, this will hopefully make him feel more confident about the whole thing. I mentioned it today and he didn't seem entirely keen. Do any of you have any ideas to make him feel more confident and happy with the whole thing. With DD she had her first haircut when she was the same age as DS and she looked forward to the whole experience and really enjoyed it, she just saw it as being like mummy. DS is not the same, i think we will have to read Biff and Chips "going to the hairdresser" a few more times.
