What coat on earth do people wear with posh frocks?

I'm going to a wedding likely to be full of quite cool types. I used to attempt cool, I think, in the past, but I can't really remember Grin

I have a red dress which is knee length and more filmy than not and I'm intending to go bare-legged with tan shoes. But what on earth can I wear arriving and at the ceremony, it's bound to be draughty.

I was thinking a fake fur wrap or shrug or something but I can't seem to find anything that isn't a bit princessy and also it's a bit twixt the seasons isn't it (end of Feb) so I don't want to buy something very wintery.

I have a bit of budget, mainly because it's DP's ex who still hankers after him who's getting married.

Oh shut up you are LOVING IT

cyb · 14/02/2012 20:27

whole page full of these bad boys

mumsky · 14/02/2012 20:27

I am NOT loving it, it's a total drag and I won't be doing a what on this flat earth can I wear for my wedding thread Grin

Something that looks like this

Basically, you'll look very sophisticated with your trench coat and nude shoes during the ceremony, and then you take it off when it's warm to reveal your lovely red dress.

Please, no fake fur!

mumsky · 14/02/2012 20:40

I definitely can't afford it, and I have never liked the whole asymmetric thing, but I find myself wanting this this.

Thats a cool trench Franca, would last forever, but just a bit too smart for me.

Oh asymmetric dresses. I wouldn't instinctively go for one, but I think they are actually quite flattering. The colour of the one you linked to is fantastic.

I think trench coats can be very versatile. but perhaps not in black and yes, that one is very elegant. Not to mention Shock expensive.

TapselteerieO · 14/02/2012 21:39

Lovely and I think it could be dressed down too.

TapselteerieO · 14/02/2012 21:40

Blue here, how long is your dress?

TapselteerieO · 14/02/2012 21:43

I like this too but it is black, though it says it is "customisable".

bettybat · 14/02/2012 21:46

It really shocks me that anyone would wear really fur these days. Seriously - do you really not know/care about the suffering involved?

And what's up with fake fur? Expensively made fake is just gorgeous these days!

theseventhdwarf · 14/02/2012 21:53

Not sure if you want / could go there but I was at reiss outlet store a while ago and they had a lovely cream/ ivory coat ....

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 14/02/2012 21:57

You could blow all your money on this beauty which would be ace over a stretchy dress (though I don't like the no shoulder look of the pink one you've linked to). Please don't buy the rabbit one - it's horrible.

Classic cropped trench

Francagoestohollywood · 14/02/2012 22:17

Betty, I don't like real fur, and therefore I don't like fake too.

Remus (oh I get stupidly excited about actually addressing someone as Remus Grin!), the Westwood jacket is perfect(though I personally would be freezing wearing just that in February... )

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 14/02/2012 22:23

I wore my leather jacket (sadly not VW!) yesterday and I was fine - depends how long you'll be outside, I guess.

mumsky · 15/02/2012 07:27

this coat looks nice and my size is the only one left which seems prophetic!

I also like the idea of a leather jacket. I don't mind being freezing - there's usually quite a lot of hanging around with these things, but I can't look naked Grin

I think a leather jacket looks more effortless and edgier than a long wool coat, and I would get a lot more wear out of one.

bettybat · 15/02/2012 09:37

Francagoestohollywood fair dinkum! Completely get that - apologies, thought you meant fake fur lost out to real :(

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/02/2012 10:59

Get a leather jacket - there are loads of brilliant ones around, especially if your budget is good. I will come back later with more links, if you want. Saw a yummy one in (I think) Pied A Terre recently.

mumsky · 15/02/2012 12:22

oh yes, please do link to leather jackets. I've seen this one which would go beautiful with my other dress option.

VERY nice (though I'm not so fond of the plaity bit on the collar) - why couldn't you wear that with your red dress?

Ted Baker leather and suede - nicer undone than fastened

I don't like this one but the colour is quite nice

Navy - I really like this one

Would need to see irl as I think grey leather often looks cheap - I like this though from what I can see
