I keep reading about it and I know nothing about it. What do I use/do and what are the benefits? Thanks

Oil cleansing is my absolute holy grail of skin care! It works on the principle that oil attracts oil therefore drawing excess oil and dirt out of your skin. I suffer with eczema so have to be very careful with how I handle my skin and this is the only routine that works for me:

1- Massage my face with a mix of Almond Oil and Castor Oil
2- Wet a face cloth with water as hot ad I can stand, you have to be careful not to scald yourself!
3- Put the cloth over my face and leave it to "steam" for a minute
4- Repeat steps 2 & 3
5- Use cloth to remove excess oil, then rinse your face

I usually then moisturise with pure Shea butter. I had a link that explained so much better than I just did! I'll see if I can find it.

Hmm can't find my original link but this one is pretty clear too: www.crunchybetty.com/nitty-gritty-on-the-oil-cleansing-method

I've been doing this for a couple of weeks now - I use Extra Virgin Olive Oil, rub half a teaspoonful into my face with fingers (it melts thick coatings of mascara fabulously!!!) then just wash off with hot flannel and rinse.

I am using EVOO as moisturiser on my bump (6 months preg) and also am now using it instead of shower gel Shock as my skin, although it doesn't look dry, feels like's it's cracking from within, horrible feeling. In the shower, I just put some on a towelling flannel, then use it like shower gel. Armpits etc are very clean.

I am a major convert to this. You can use sunflower oil too, I prefer EVOO as it's heavier and my skin feels so much less dry. My skin isn't clogged at all, it is just lurvely and soft and fabby.

Also use EVOO as face moisturiser - it's lovely.

I have a selection of weleda massage oils. can I use these? they are just fragranced oils, I think.

MummyPocPoc · 12/02/2012 21:50

I'm not sure about fragranced oils on face though, it may cause irritation?

If you have a blank carrier oil, it'd be fine, but different oils are for different skin issues IYSWIM so read carefully. Any one of those oils would be fine for shower tho.

I read that if you mix sugar with oil, you can make a lovely exfoliator too.

Am on major frugal thing here, so cutting down on toiletries etc, and am very very happy with the results Smile

Oh this is brilliant! I'm going to try this, is there a particular oil that seems to be better than others? I really hate the smell of olive oil so that puts me off slightly!

I use jojoba as my carrier oil, been doing it for about 6 months.

love it love it love it.

I also have eczema which can take a liking to my winter dry skin but not this year! My face has stayed nicely unflaked, pores are minimal, skin tone much perkier and my whole face is smoother.

What is your skin type and look for an oil which suits, jojoba is good for acne etc, avocado good for dry skin.

mousymouseafraidofdogs · 14/02/2012 09:55

if you wear make up, do you have to remove that first, or can you oil-cleanse it off?
atm, I wash it off with soap and moisturise afterwards, have eczema as well and I really have to remove it before bed or it breaks out.

SimoneD · 14/02/2012 10:06

Ive been using coconut oil - smells lovely

UmYeahLikeTotally · 14/02/2012 12:32

So can you use pretty much any oil?

I've had a look on their website, and Holland & Barrett has jojoba/coconut/argan oils. Could I just pick any of these to use?

Do you still have to moisturise afterwards?

Does anyone use oil in their hair too?

(Sorry for questions!!)

Megatron · 15/02/2012 10:02

Sorry to keep harping on about this but I have normal/combination skin, can anyone suggest what oils would be best? Thanks.

Megatron I have an oily T zone, and find extra virgin olive oil does the trick though do plan to experiment with castor oil too. Light scrubbing with flannel deals with flaky bits at the side of my nose. Wish I'd discovered this years ago!

snowballinashoebox · 15/02/2012 17:49

the castor oil draws all the yuk out - experiment, the beauty is you have oil in the cupboard so no expensive outlay.

maybe jojoba would be good for a t zone, worth considering.

oh and expect a bit of a bumpy few weeks while your skin gets used to it and you wish you hadn't bothered but honestly you are soooo worth itSmile

masmith · 26/11/2012 00:21
