I have some two-tone silk; is it too eighties to make an evening dress in now?

It's Cerise/black - I'm sure two-tone is the wrong description - I got it years ago

I need a new dress, could I use it or is it really too eighties?

Depends on the cut of the dress. Could be kind of cool.

What pattern tho?

How about full circle skirt & fitted bodice?

Or what do you call the shaped vertical seams?

Or I have some rust linen - maybe that would be better

depends - if is silky silk then don't do it. If it is chiffony then It could look pretty modern. Please don't make a linen evening dress...

It's not silk - could it be 'raw' silk? sort of nubbly?

Linen is lovely Wink

I have an old New Look pattern (6153) which has a V neck and those seams which is quite nice

Do you mean shot silk? So it's one colour from one side and one from another?

Red and black evening dress might look a bit of a gothy vampire dress if you're not careful (unless that's what you're after!)

KatyMac · 12/02/2012 14:13

Yes it could be

It's more pink than red really I think

Pink and black is very 80s. But that's not necessarily a bad thing! Could you maybe use it in panels to tone it down? Or it would make a gorgeous jacket to wear over a black dress.

KatyMac · 12/02/2012 15:17

Oh a Jacket - I'm not sure I'm that clever

I like the idea of panels - I have a dress with panels......but I have not black silk, I think it would have to be silk wouldn't it?

The two tone stuff is shot silk, raw silk is the kind that looks sort of snagged all over.

KatyMac · 12/02/2012 18:49

It's not really like that

It's like the warp and the weft are different colours and there are knobbly bits or flaws through it
