Do you tip your hairdresser?

and if so- is it always 10%

I find this really hard. My hairdresser is self employed and rents chair space in a London salon.

He's been there for years so is not a junior- he's been there longer than the salon owner in fact.

He tends to wash my hair as well as cut it, so it's not as if I feel I have to tip a junior and not him.

The whole thing is quite expensive when you add in fares- £85.

I know that he sets his own fees, and he doesn't want to increase them, and they are reasonable-£65- but the fares add a lot on.

I understood that it's not really the done thing to tip salon owners- usually juniors etc- so wonder if you think I should tip him, and by 10%. I usually give him around £3 in change but wonder if that is mean?

No I don't as I'm too tight! I pay £55 and can't justify an extra fiver on top. I do however though normally give a tip if I have a haircut very near to Xmas.

satonawall · 11/02/2012 19:32

I am payng more for my hair cut than you ladies are giving for a tip! I pay £4 for my hair cut. Chinese ladies in salon. No appointment - just wait your turn. Lots of compliments about my hair.

satonawall · 11/02/2012 19:33

Sorry, "paying".

brighthair · 11/02/2012 19:36

Yes
Because she cuts it exactly as I want and then blow drys and straightens it - I have really thick curly hair so it takes longer and she does it beautifully

bunionscomingsoon · 11/02/2012 19:45

I do not tip mine it is the salon owner she charges £70 -£80 for colour and that is enough I feel. No one tips me in retail and I give a service too.!Smile

BettyBathroom · 11/02/2012 19:52

Used to but not any more. I pay £50 for a cut, feel that's enough.

anniewoo · 11/02/2012 20:30

Yes i tip both the stylist and the junior who washed it. My weekly blow dry is expensive!

mrsebojones · 12/02/2012 14:54

Nope, though I always feel a tad mean that I don't... but... I pay £95 for a cut, half head of highlights and a finish. I can just about afford it but have already told myself that if her costs go over £100, I will have to try a junior stylist or go to a cheaper salon.

However, I occasionally go for a blow dry which is £25... then I usually give her £2 tip.

bessie26 · 12/02/2012 15:05

No. I do feel a bit mean about it as she always does a good job (£65 for cut, colour & blow dry), but I also see the beautician (owner) at the same place, so would have to then tip her too & I always pay by card, so I'd have to remember to take the right cash with me every time (I think once you start tippping, you have to do it every time (unless they suddenly become crap), so it's all too complicated & instead I give them £20 every xmas to buy a bottle of wine at their xmas party.

MildredH · 13/02/2012 12:29

No- I never tip. Am a bit of a hairdresser hobo... Since moving back to this area I've tried several and not really been happy with any..

I think even when I find a goodun I'll not tip as I also usually pay by card and find the whole fishing around for change/ subtley- awkwardly pushing it into someone's hand really cringey.

monkeysmama · 13/02/2012 12:44

I usually give the hairwasher £2 or 3 depending on what change I have and an extra £5 to my hairdresser. She's the best I've ever found and is worth it. I buy my shampoo there too and she gives me a discount so it works out even in the end.

etefas · 07/10/2013 14:39

it is nice to tip your hairdresser a specially when she dose little bit extra for you and don't charge you. i am hairdresser my self and when i blow-dry it for them or do a little trim and i make sure they know that i am not charge in them and when it coms to pay the don't bother to give you at list £2 or £3 it is not fair on us. next time you charge normal price.

mamaonion · 07/10/2013 14:54

I'm really relieved to read this, I have always been completely befuddled by tipping hairdressers! Seems I'm not the only one who struggles with the idea of paying extra on top - mine costs £100, sometimes has cost £140 for cut and colour in my previous salon, and to then tip on top...ouch. But I always have felt sheepish walking away, and sometimes would tip and sometimes wouldn't. Next time I will confidently not tip and not feel like a cheap skank!

tanfastic · 07/10/2013 15:08

I used to when I worked full time and had the money but I don't now as every penny counts. Always feel guilty though.

MrsRebeccaDanvers · 07/10/2013 16:11

Sometimes £5 which is less than 10% but usually nothing if I'm on a tight budget. Haven't had a bad cut yet...

RevoltingPeasant · 07/10/2013 17:07

I pay £35-40 for a haircut and £8 for eyebrow wax (always get them done together).

I always have change of a tenner and pay the hairdresser £5 and the eyebrow lady £2 over, 'rounding up' to £40-45 and £10 respectively.

I think this is fair enough and I do like them both!

polyhymnia · 07/10/2013 18:43

Yes, if I have a good one, as now, always give tip of 10% sometimes rounded up a bit. A good hairdresser is priceless IMO so am happy to tip. Most people at salon I go to do the same.

.Only exception would be if they were the owner.

BackforGood · 07/10/2013 18:47

My mobile hairdresser drives to my house. It's her own business, and, as such she sets her own charges, so no, I don't tip her - she works out the prices she needs to charge to cover her expenses and earn a living.

She was here last week - 2 haircuts (me and grown up ds) = £12 between us.
Why on earth would you pay £20 in fayres, to get to somewhere you weren't otherwise going, to then pay £65 for a haircut ? Shock

doggydaft · 07/10/2013 19:04

Usually I'm getting something else done at the salon as well as hair eg manicure or waxing.
I always leave a total tip, normally £5 or so, I get great service, have been squeezed in many times at short notice or the girls have stayed on a bit later for me so well worth it imo.
I pay £23 for cut, £40 for cut/colour, £15 for shellac nails and £5-10 for waxing so good value for money I think.

I have been going to the same lady for five years. I love tipping well - tips funded my uni days but I never tip her because she is the owner and I pay £130 for a half head and cut every six weeks.
