What jeans can you wear?

I am flummoxed. Any ideas? I am 5ft, have sturdy thighs and a big bum, size 12 sometimes 10 (currently dieting). Boot cut suit me but I am feeling a bit mumsy.

Straight leg with a bit of stretch are good - M&S do ridiculously cheap version which is worth a try to see if they suit you

Chubfuddler · 07/02/2012 19:27

The asda great bum jeans are a straight leg rather than a skinny. Cheap as chips and my pairs still washing and wearing well six months on.

Bluestocking · 07/02/2012 19:28

I don't think boot cut are frumpy as long as they are long enough for the shoes you are wearing them with. They should not skim the tops of your mum boots! If they suit you, go on wearing them.

AppleHEAD · 07/02/2012 19:30

I agree with Bluestocking it's only when they flap about you look stupid! You need sturdy clumpy boots with them..

imoanruby · 07/02/2012 19:32

Straight leg jeans are lovely and a good alternative to skinny jeans, Next do some nice ones.

Bootcuts are ok as long as they are long right down to the heel with boots or just skimming the ground in converse or similar.

GColdtimer · 07/02/2012 19:42

Definitely long enough and have some nice clumpy boots. Will try straight legs, and am intrigued by asda bum jeans! do you tuck them into boots or wear them over. The worst bits on my whole body are my thighs so do not want to draw attention to them.

I've two pairs of fab straight leg from fat face. They look great with boots or converse.

sweetheart · 07/02/2012 20:21

I am a short pear shape and I wear Gap long and learn jeans.

ConstanceChatterley · 07/02/2012 20:29

About the same size and shape here (few inches taller but it's all the torso so stumpy legs). I'm going to go against the grain here and say that I find straight leg jeans much less flattering than skinnies - my most shapely parts of my legs are calves to ankle so would rather accentuate than hide iyswim?

Go for skinnies and maybe wear tucked into ankle boots with a small heel to give a bit of length.

GColdtimer · 07/02/2012 20:41

Right, thanks everyone. I have got a banked day with nursery to use up so when I hit my target weight I am going to go and try some different styles and treat myself to new jeans. Am 40 thus year and want to get out if my rut. Grin

I'm an hourglass 5'4" (size 10) and frankly nothing else is an option! I have a regular length pair for wearing with flats and a long-leg pair for wearing with heels so that they are always 1/2-1 inch above the ground.

Always dark blue and good quality. Frumpy looks bad, this is the best jeans shape for me so the least frumpy of the lot.

JoyceDivision · 07/02/2012 20:47

Try Gap's 'Curvy' jean, similar to a bootcut and v v flattering, I always get comments on them when I wear them Smile

mrsmartin · 07/02/2012 20:55

2nd vote for gap curvy jeans - I have tree trunk thighs (50's pin up style I think), am size 10 and they fit perfectly. I also love their slim jeans and boyfit. If boot cut suit you then wear them, but straight legs are a great alternative

Maraki · 07/02/2012 22:02

Hello
I am 5'9 with wide hips, flat bum and reasonably slim legs. I can only wear skinny jeans with long tops and knee high boots, otherwise my legs and hips look like a carrot :-)

I absolutely love flared jeans: trendy with converse and heels and certainly not 'mumsy'

AmethystMoon · 07/02/2012 22:21

Another vote for Gap Curvy jeans. I'm 5'5" size 12 with big bum and thighs but small waist in comparison. These fit perfectly the only ones that don't gape at the back Smile

polyhymnia · 08/02/2012 10:42

Just to second those that say bootcut don't have to be frumpy but must be long enough and well-cut, preferably in good quality denim - and I think very dark denim looks much better at the moment than light, which IMO can look a bit frumpy in winter.

KateSpade · 08/02/2012 10:42

I'm 5ft tall, and before baby i used to wear Topshop skinnies in a size 10, they were a staple in my wardrobe. They didn't used to make me look stumpy i loved them.

I can't wait till i can get back into them!

GColdtimer · 08/02/2012 11:14

Envy at kate's skinnies in size 10. Your legs are obviously a lot slimmer than mine!

Also relieved that bootcuts don't have to be frumpy.

Have got lots of jeans to check out when I go shopping. I don't wear converse/flats that often because I am such a shortarse.

Would second the recommend for Gap Long and Lean - may be worth trying on a few different Long and Lean/Curvy ones to see what works.

Overall, I think the skinny flare is flattering. Basically just a modern version of the bootcut. Top Shop Jessies are great.

bettybat · 08/02/2012 21:45

I just don't get skinny jeans. I really don't :( They're so uncomfortable. Too tight in a bad way, creaky behind the knees, and a horrible gap in the gusset. I've tried on so many different makes, and it's not my size - friends of larger/different shapes to me swear by them! I wish I got them because if I did, I'd wear them even if I didn't look fantastically hot. But I can't wear something I don't understand.

I do have massive skinny jean envy though. I'm envious of people who wear them.

Straight leg seems to be the best way. I do have a lot of jean heart ache, it seems.
