Im looking to change hair dyes as home dyes just aren't lasting and I can't afford salon colouring every four weeks..
I know that someone on here recommended the above type but im not sure what mix I need.

My normal colour is this one www.amazon.co.uk/Garnier-Belle-Colour-Light-Brown/dp/B001RYSBFY/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1328639821&sr=8-8 basically my hair is a light brown reddy colour. I don't suit ash colours.
Hope someone can help

I am no professional but have had my hair dyed in salons for years- first greys at 25!!

After having my ds2 I started doing it myself using the permanent ones from the chemist but just found them to look very orange at the roots.

I now use majirel which I get from a Sallys shop. They have the colour swatch book. My hair is mid brown so I use 4 as base colour- you could use 5 to be slightly lighter. The colours are 1- black, 2 very dark brown, 3 dark brown,4 brown,5 light brown and so on going lighter and lighter.

So you'd need to buy a base colour then the tone you want ie. I use 5.3 golden brown and mix HALF the tube of 4 and HALF a tube of 5.3. You really need to see the swatch book to determine which tone you want. You then need to buy peroxide- if you're staying close to natural colour 20%. 100mls of dye needs 75 mls peroxide.

I would get some advice as it is quite strong stuff! There are threads on here you could search for and I saw a you tube video of a girl using it which was helpful!

ditto what mrsmoscow says, except i got significant greys at 19.

i used to pay hairdressers $$$$ for one colour hair dye that with a bit of care I could do myself. It's not highlights or anything tricky.

Also, although I use chemist boxes (such as Nice & Easy), I don;t find they last the full 4 weeks. I am grey at the temples so regrowth really notices.

a couple of tips, go lighter rather than darker. Go 5.3 rather than the 4s. This is because being an amateur you are likely to overlay the colour and over time you will get dark, blackish buildup.

I buy my majirel from ebay - it's usually about 6-8 pounds a tube. Any old 20 percent peroxide will do.

I tend to use a third of a tube with a bit of the warmer shade mixed in each time. I measure the 50:75 ratio of dye to developer with kitchen tablespoon measures in a hairdye bowl with a tint brush (pennys at a Sallys)

Apply from visible greys onwards. This stuff stains so protect floors and skin with vaseline (a certain amount of scalp dying is inevitable and will wash in two washes) Time it and don't go over the time. It will overprocess.

I also find you can use an old bottle saved from a chemist brush but it can sometimes be too thick. I personally don't bother and just use the tinting brush

I can't easily get to Sallys (two children under three) but the big ones have helpful staff (Shaftesbury Ave I recall was good) who are in the business and who can advise.

Thanks both, I've never heard of Sally's. How would I know how much of each colour I would need to mix. Say I went for 5 and then 5.3 how do I know how much of each to use.

Hope this makes sense

Sorry not to answer. You need I think 3/4 of the base colour (that would be the 5.3) and 1/4 of the warm shade. Or you could go 2/3 base and 1/3 warm. Trial and error and about how warm you want to go.

otchayaniye · 10/02/2012 21:41

It's confusing how the base colours are named. Ask Sallys (there's a website) or you could go to one of the salon forums

VivaLaSativa · 10/02/2012 21:47

I would advise against using 20 % peroxide, you will end up burnt, bald or both. 9% is fine for deposit only (not lightening only colouring).

georgesmummy11 · 10/02/2012 22:37

If your adding colour that is darker than your own hair and have natural grey you should use 6% peroxide.

20% peroxide should watered down before mixing with colour and should not be put on the scalp

VivaLaSativa · 11/02/2012 00:08

You cannot purchase 20% peroxide without a trade card at Sally's or any other wholesaler. this is because it is used for foiling and not suitable for use on the scalp.

The law was changed recently because numpties try and replicate a trade that people take years learning, thinking they can do it at home.
Many can, I'm not disputing that at all but some of the advice here is silly.
Chemicals can be very dangerous in the wrong hands hence the law change.

Watering down developer is not recommended. Peroxide is cheap enough in any strength, why would one need to water it down? Just check the label before purchase.

There's confusion over volume an percent -- 6 percent, 20 vol

otchayaniye · 11/02/2012 00:22

Oops, my fault

mrsmoscow · 11/02/2012 10:50

Oh dear. Sorry I think I am responsible for the 20% - I meant 20 volume!

I definitely think you need to get some advice from either a Sally's or a hairdresser. I did loads of research myself.

Don't just slap it on and hope for the best!!
